Introduction

I am always trying to learn more and become better at my work. I associate with the best people in my field to learn from them. I put out extra effort to do the best work possible for my customers. I try to listen carefully to customers' wants and do my best to make sure I understand them and satisfy their requests. Everything! I'm not accountable to a boss or beholden to a time schedule. I can't be fired or laid off! I only have to please myself and my customers (oh, and my wife, of course!) I love the work, and hope I can do it until I leave this earth. I get to spend much of my time with wonderful people who share my love of pianos and music. If I do my job well, it makes people very happy and appreciative. I am respected by people in my profession who are my heroes, and by customers who I admire for their accomplishments. It's all win-win!

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
Yes. Every year I attend the 5-day long annual convention of the Piano Technicians Guild, and a 3-day conference of the Western Region of PTG. At these I attend many classes and learn the latest developments in the field from the experts and leaders. I also teach classes there myself. I also attend every meeting of the local chapter of the Guild, which is more than 20 per year. I do this not only to keep my skills current, but because I love doing it.
How did you get started doing this type of work?
I didn't decide. I just "fell into it." I was drifting aimlessly after college, and after a while my father asked if I'd be interested in learning to tune pianos. I shrugged and said, "I don't know." He took that as a "yes," set me up with a teacher, and from day one I loved the work and have stayed with it ever since.
What types of customers have you worked with?
Many people with pianos are dissatisfied with the way they sound, or how the keyboard feels. I've spent years learning how to fix these problems, and most of my work is now geared toward this.
