About this pro

How does your service stand out?

No one does the kind of analysis I do. With experience dating back to 1980, I have seen examples of folks who were sold policies that would never do what the agent told them, unless they died within the next 4-10 years. My policy analyses tell you exactly what your policy does, and how it does it. If your policy is not on track to provide the benefits you believed you were obtaining, and it is possible to put it back on track, I will show you how. If you need to replace your policy with something more appropriate, I will show you what you need to look for. Then you can look for it from any agent, including me. There is a fee for performing a policy analysis -- it usually takes a minimum of 3-4 hours to complete one. However, if my analysis leads to my submission of an application for new insurance for you, there is no charge for the analysis. I am prohibited by law from both charging a fee and collecting a commission.

What do you enjoy about the work you do?

My work is not a "job"! I thoroughly enjoy the work I do, and derive genuine satisfaction from making sure a person or family has the right coverage for their needs. Every situation is different and unique, and there is no one-size-fits-all solution. By performing solid, in-depth fact-finding, I make sure that I fully understand each consumer's protection needs, and deliver only the most suitable recommendations to meet those needs.

I was struggling to find the right disability benefit when I was no longer able to work due to my health condition. In such devastating situation, Mr. Herr guided me with his knowledge and support though emails and phones. He is the most patient and knowledgeable insurance agent I have ever talked to. I am very thankful to find him.

Best experience ever with an insurance agent. Max did all the work, provided me with all the options and explained them all. We exchanged numerous e-mails and phone calls and he was always gracious and helpful even when I requested changes. I have recommended him to everyone I know. What a great guy!

As I got into the process of applying for Covered California Obamacare - I was so confused and frustrated trying to navigate the system and decide what to do, and the two agents I had worked with were not very helpful and in fact pushing me to purchase "critical care" add on policies. Via googling, I somehow came across Max's intelligent blog entries regarding Obamacare - I contacted him and BOOM - just like that he helped me figure it out, set it up - and has been professional, friendly, clear and available. I couldn't ask for more.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
All California resident insurance licensees are required to do a minimum of 24 hours of continuing education every two years in order to renew their licenses, some of which includes mandatory courses. Because I hold multiple insurance licenses, I typically do far more than the minimum required CE. But I also write and edit Continuing Education and other courses for insurance agents for a national educational provider. This alone requires that I study a wide variety of insurance topics in order to be able to fulfill my role as a Subject Matter Expert.
What types of customers have you worked with?
I provide in depth analysis of existing and/or proposed life and disability (including health insurance, Medicare Supplement and Medicare Advantage) insurance policies. I also review and develop cases for attorneys suing insurance companies and/or agents for bad faith, misrepresentation, and sales of unsuitable products to insurance consumers. I can provide claims advocacy assistance when dealing with life or disability insurance claims.
Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?
A case involving variable life and annuity policies I was retained on in Texas about a year ago had been lingering for nearly five years with no credible settlement offer from the insurance company. The plaintiffs' attorney had hired one expert witness who failed to provide the definitive answers needed to move the case forward. As a result, the "best offer" from the insurance company was a $100,000 paid-up life insurance policy and $50,000 in cash to drop the case. I was brought in, read about 1,000 pages of deposition testimony, analyzed the policies, and wrote a six page report critical of the defense expert witness, the insurance products, and the agent. Within a matter of a few weeks of submitting my report, the case was settled with the following outcome: a fully paid-up $2,000,000 death benefit and an undisclosed amount of cash payment in excess of $500,000. Obviously, this was an unusual case, and not all cases will have a similar result. But I am certainly proud to have been an integral part of the settlement obtained by the attorney for his clients. And, as a result, I have been retained in two more cases for the same law firm.
What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?
While there are more than 150,000 licensed life agents in California, there are only about 30 licensed Life & Disability Insurance Analysts in the state. A life agent often sells you the product that earns him/her the most commission, whether it's the right product for you or not. Sometimes, all their clients are sold the exact same product. There is no "one-size-fits-all" life or health insurance policy. Your insurance products should provide you with peace of mind. Make sure that you understand the coverage being proposed (or which you have already purchased).
