Jazz piano lessons involve learning the basic chords and basic jazz chords. This will enable a person to play a 'lead sheet' which is the melody with chords written above it.
The pianist will then make up his/her own arrangement. This makes the pianist understand what is happening theory wise as opposed to just learning to play notes.
