FAQs
- What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
Pricing for audio services often varies between events. There are always 2 factors: equipment and labor. Labor is often a flat rate depending on the event which includes set up and breakdown time (and don't worry, hiring a plumber will run your bill higher than we will with labor!). The more complicated factor is based on equipment needs for an event - how many speakers and what kind? Which soundboards will we need? Will we need to provide music? How many microphones and will they be wired or wireless? Will this be a concert that requires some extra processing equipment or simply a keynote speech where we have everything we need built in? Rentals are also based on equipment needs. All will always be explained in a quote before the event.
- What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
It is always difficult to stay up to date with developments in the sound engineering field. Most of our progressing practices come simply from working with other engineers that do things differently than I. Meeting an engineer on a concert tour from England or in town for a convention gives the opportunity to share new equipment and theory. Electronic conventions also help with this.
- How did you get started doing this type of work?
I started in high school theater. I didn't want to follow my brother's same path with sports, so I tried out theater. Finding very quickly my complete lack of talent for being on the stage, I tested and fell in love with technical theater. I taught myself the basics of wiring for sound and lighting, equipment and operation, and every time I was asked to work any event I jumped at the opportunity. When it became apparent to me that I loved having to work events during school more than anything else I was sure I found what I wanted my career to be. I was also fortunate enough to meet and be hired by CBS Radio's engineering team, who then trained me over the course of 5 years, and I was able to start my own company at the same time. The longer I do this the more I fall in love with it!
