Joel grew up in St. Helena, where his father was the mayor, served on the school board and the city council, and currently practices law. Following his father's example of community service, Joel has served as a chairman of the annual St. Helena Rotary Ball, is a member of the St. Helena Public Schools Foundation board, and is currently the president of the board's endowment trust. He has been an English-Spanish operating room translator for Rotoplast in Guatemala, and a Peace Corps volunteer in Panama, where he taught sustainable agriculture practices.
