Linda L.

My 12-year old daughter has been taking flute lessons with Wayne Basker for about two years. Previously, my daughter played piano for 6 years before switching to flute. Wayne is not only a dedicated, talented musician, but also a great teacher. He is so friendly, kind and easy to work with. Wayne is always so professional with a wonderfully positive attitude. He is very attentive and passionate about helping students to reach their goals. Wayne always goes the extra mile to help out with my daughter to prepare for Certificate of Merit and auditions for youth orchestras. He is always encouraging (even when my daughter encounters challenges with more difficult pieces) and offers advice on various different ways to improve. When he teaches, he focuses on tone, technique, basic music theory, developing strong practice habits, and musicality. It is rare to find a teacher who is so caring, instills the love of music in a child, and inspires them to do better. I highly recommend Wayne to anyone who is looking for a flute teacher!
Basker Flute Studio's reply
Thank you for your kind words, Linda. It has been an honor teaching your daughter. Her piano background and support in the home have certainly helped. I know that she will continue to grow as a flutist and musician. Wayne

FAQs

  • What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

Individual lessons are conducted on a weekly basis. They range in length from 30 to 60 minutes, depending on age and level of commitment. Tuition is due once a month prior to the first lesson. The price is the same whether there are 4 or 5 lessons in a month. Please contact me for more details.

  • What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

    1) I begin by learning of the student's music background and goals. 2) I explain the commitment involved in learning a musical instrument, including practice time and investing in some necessary music accessories. 3) Prior to our first meeting, I confirm that the student has a flute in working order. If they don't, then I provide sources for repair, rental, or purchase. 4) If the student already has a flute, I have them play some notes to ascertain their skill level. I then create a plan to guide them in their development as a flutist. 5) I give the student or parent a copy of my Flute Studio Policy and go over some of the key points. I answer any questions they might have.

  • What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

I have been teaching flute in the San Francisco Bay Area for over 25 years. I have taught private and group lessons at numerous schools, where I have coached hundreds of students, enhancing the level of their school bands and orchestras and successfully preparing them to win auditions and competitions. I received a Bachelor Degree in Flute Performance from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. Additionally, I completed music courses at San Francisco State University, Brevard Music Center in North Carolina, Aspen Music Festival in Colorado, and the California Music Center on the campus of the University of Notre Dame de Namur, in Belmont, California. I received my Bachelor of Music in Flute Performance from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. My primary flute teachers were Paul Renzi, Leone Buyse, Barbara Breeden, and Victor Morosco. I received advanced coaching from Julius Baker, Geoffrey Gilbert, and Keith Underwood. I have been a member of several Bay Area orchestras performing on flute and piccolo the symphonic repertoire, as well as Broadway musicals. I have performed steady contracts and concerts with with pianist Merle Saunders, composer/pianist Nolan Gasser, and with singer/songwriter/guitarist Joan Baez.
