Introduction: I love teaching and pride myself on my ability to accommodate many different learning styles. I like to keep my lessons interesting and fun so my students have a positive lesson experience and I encourage them to perform at our quarterly concerts. When teaching it is rewarding for me to find different ways of communicating musical theories and ideas to my students, and I try and create a curriculum that matches a students' specific learning style.

Ive known Dave SIlva for about six years. During this time Ive been able to get to know him well both professionally and personally. I first met Dave when he was a student in my music composition and theory classes at Chico State. He was always a diligent, responsible, and academically strong student, and his maturity and focus set him apart from his fellow classmates. I could tell at the time that Dave chose to make music the core of his life, and I recommended him for a few student scholarships to help him out with his studies. After Dave graduated from Chico State and joined the faculty at Chico School of Rock, my wife and I specifically chose to have him be a music instructor for our son, Jonah, who studied guitar and theory privately with him. During that time, Dave also started mentoring our sons band via the Chico School of Rocks excellent Band Builders program, which helps young people to gain experience performing in ensembles in professional venues around Chico. Dave has given an amazing amount of energy toward making this a meaningful experience for his students, and I have been blown away by his attention to detail, professional coaching, and beyond generous commitment to the kids involved. Ive also been lucky enough to get to know Dave personally, and consider him a friend and fellow music professional. In my opinion, Dave has been a real asset to any community, both as a teacher, musician, and overall fine human being. I recommend him wholeheartedly for whatever ventures he pursues.

Dave is a fantastic teacher! As a middle-aged adult who had long wanted to learn to play guitar but felt it might be too late, I can attest to how encouraging and effective Dave's instruction has been. He is always patient but not complacent about my progress. He's really good at matching his students' musical tastes to appropriate challenges, so that when I am working on tough chords it's in the context of a song I love and I have the perfect incentive to practice. And he figured out in a few minutes how to interpret the weird tuning of "Skinny Love" into a familiar sound once I requested to learn that song. He's clearly a talented musician and I respect his mastery and the wisdom he has to impart. I can honestly say that in the context of a very busy week, guitar class is always a welcome chance to learn and have fun. I've made a lot of progress in the past few months. Dave is awesome! One day I hope my 6 year old son takes lessons from him.

Music isn't Dave's job, it's his life. His passion & dedication to his students is priceless. He makes learning fun & produces amazing results. My son ( drummer) & his band have had amazing results because of their mentor & teacher Dave. Our son participated in Band Builders and a Band Builders week-long camp with Dave Silva and he had an awesome experience. Dave is knowledgeable and patient, and help my son and his fellow bandmates harness their creativity in ways I never thought possible. Dave is exceptional!

FAQs

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
First lesson is an intro to the instrument and goal-setting along with a simple first assignment. For more advanced players I'll get a skills assessment and determine a practice curriculum for them, perhaps set some more challenging goals.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a B.A. in music with an emphasis in classical and jazz guitar, piano and vocal pedagogy. I have also performed music for 30 years as a rock, blues and bluegrass player. For my students I hold three student concerts a year and I find that preparing and Performing for these concerts is an excellent tool for them excelling at their instrument.
How did you get started doing this type of work?
I've always loved working with people, teaching, and playing music, so it seemed simple to combine all the elements into one profession.
