I've been taking voice lessons with Liz for about two years and couldn't be happier with how far I've come as a singer! Liz is patient, engaging and very adept at refining weaknesses in my voice.
When I first started as a complete novice, she focused on stabilizing my breathing and air control. As I improved, she helped me with vowel tones, consonant placements and extending my range in both directions. I remember being super excited the first day I realized I had a stable vibrato!
We've worked on a very large range of repertoire ranging from Bach cantatas to Hamilton musical. Liz also often recommends relevant auditions in musicals/operas and worked with me to prepare my audition pieces. Since last year, I've performed in my first musical and G&S operetta!
I highly recommend Liz for anyone looking to become a singer, improve their voice and/or just want to experience what's it like to resonate your body with a properly controlled voice!

Liz is the best!! I’ve had some vocal lessons before and Liz is definitively the best instructor I’ve ever had. She works with my voice and really focuses on the fundamentals, which helps me get rid of the bad habits that I’ve built over the years of singing in the wrong way. Once the fundamentals are right, it became so much easier to hit the notes with clarity and stability. I love how she spend time to understand my own strengths and weaknesses, and not just trying to make me sing like everyone else. She picks the songs that work for my voice, are interesting and challenging. I love taking Liz’s classes!

Liz is a great voice teacher who tailors her lessons to me. She identifies areas that I can improve on and finds the exercises that work for me. Sometimes she will try several approaches to see which is most effective.

I’ve been singing now for just over 20 years, working with different instructors from my high school chorus teachers, to my voice instructor in college to vocal lessons by CD. NONE have been able to get the best out of me like Liz has. Her understanding of how different voices work is the greatest strength every vocal instructor should strive for. In just two sessions with her, I feel and hear a vast improvement in how my voice sounded before her and after her. So to anyone who’s looking for an instructor who works with YOU and not someone who teaches the same lessons to everyone they work with, Liz Patterson is the one you want to work with!
UPDATE:
WOW! It's going on 2 years now, and the amount of improvement and development I have gained as a singer through Liz is AMAZING. The main trait she gave me through her teaching prowess is confidence. These days, there's no song I feel I can't tackle. And it's all thanks to Liz's instructions. I can't wait to get back into lessons in 2020. Thank you for everything, Liz!

FAQs
What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
Pricing at my South San Francisco studio location is $45/30, $60/45, and $75/60 minutes.
Some students pay at each lesson, and some prefer to buy in sets of 5 or 10. However you prefer is fine! I provide receipts/invoices for students who request them.
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
I approach every new student as an individual. I like to talk to the student first about their goals and previous music training, before we do any work together.
In the first lesson, I quickly assess the personality of the singer as a guide to structure their lesson. Some singers will immediately feel comfortable singing new exercises in front of a total stranger, but most singers need time to get comfortable. I adjust to the comfort level of that student. I will often begin the warm up with breathing exercises and muscle relaxation techniques, while the student gets comfortable.
Next, I assess the range and color of the voice, as well as its strengths and weaknesses. I let the student know what I hear throughout the process, so they know exactly where their voice is starting from. I try to give a very balanced assessment of everything, good and bad.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a Masters degree in Voice Performance from Duquesne University. I have taught voice for over a decade. I also perform regularly with local opera companies.
