I wanted a teacher that could work with an older adult who not had piano lessons since childhood. After many years, I wanted to challenge myself by getting back into piano and I wanted to bring music back into my life. I was a bit nervous about making the commitment and about the time investment that would be required. I also didn’t know a good teacher so I asked around. Howard’s name came up. He was recommended as a patient and knowledgeable teacher that would do wonders with students. Howard’s approach is not the conventional one that I experienced as a child. He presents many types of approaches and uses lots of tools and techniques to build your skills and understanding of the structure of music. Now, I’m stretching myself to learn, remember and apply these skills and it feels really good! I actually enjoy practicing my piano. Now thats a testimony to Howard’s influence! If you are looking for a teacher that can accommodate your needs, encourage and inspire you, meet Howard and try him out. I’m confident that you will be very pleased with him as a professional and as a teacher.

I haven't yet had a chance to make time to see Howard - except once. And that was delightful. I've been so jammed with business. I hope to return to him in the future.

I have studied with advanced level instructors but Howard Richman was the first to help me find my true abilities. He has a true gift for teaching and his sight reading method is extraordinary! He is glad to share his super sight reading secrets! I am able to maintain a practice regimen better than ever before. That his students go on to become independent teachers is no coincidence. I naturally evolved into a teacher under his tutelage.

I have been his student since April, 2008, upon my retirement from practice of law. He is motivating me to excel and compose, resulting in my 4th musical comedy running in NY and opening in North Hollywood in August, 2015, with my next one "Cortland St" opening in LA in October-November in North Hollywood before moving on to NY in 2016. Howard's wonderful guidance makes me better with each lesson. I recommend him without hesitation.

Howard is a wonderful and talented man who will not only surpass your expectations as an amazing piano instructor, but who will also be a loving mentor and friend. He would be an asset to anyone of any age looking to advance their ability as a pianist.

Howard is the best piano teacher/ coach I have ever had. He took my raw ability and crafted it into a technique that helped me write, record and release an album as well as play every major singer/songwriter circuit in Los Angeles with a solo piano show. I can't recommend Howard enough. He is a teacher of integrity, insight, wisdom, profound kindness, intuition and sensitivity to his students. He is also brilliant with sound healing, and does incredible sound portraits...

Howard Richman is not a piano teacher...he is a LIFE CHANGER. I went to him to learn piano...but realized that the lessons I learned studying piano with the MASTER were not merely lessons in music....but lessons that helped me see outside the paradigm in all areas of my life. Often, as adults, we "come back" to our music...to study what we have been "wanting to get back to" for years. I learned that this is often a time of great change and evolution for us personally. Howard, being so intuitive, knows how to tune in to each individual's needs.... and empower them to EMPOWER themselves. He is a BRILLIANT pianist, composer and master teacher. I've watched him perform miracles with young children who struggled with other teachers who simply wanted to teach "by the book." Howard is always able to find your inner talent and abilities, possibly that are even unknown to you...and he can creatively, intuitively and intelligently create a course of action that will leave you amazed! That's why you are reading SO many wonderful comments here about him. If you are lucky enough to get to study with Howard, it will change your life!...and btw, I can now play a mean Beethoven's "Moonlight Sonata"....Thank you for everything you taught me Howard Richman! I met Howard in1990, and had NOT played the piano for over 25 years! When I was 7-8 years old, I started my first lessons. I was, not at all knowing - BUT - I was a child prodigy! At 12, I asked my parents to let me go to Juillard! I didn't even know, back then, that everyone auditions to get into this World-REKNOWNED school! I would've gotten in! My Mother, who won all interactions with my Dad - said NO! For me - she said "Maybe for college!" To make a REALLY LONG story shorter - drugs & The 60s - GOT ME! In 1990, when Howard came into my life, I was already 7 yrs, clean & sober! AND - I had a hole in my heart, as my own music, was missing! My 1st lesson with Howard was EXTRA ORDINARY! I cried! I could NOT play a note! After awhile, that same lesson, Howard just told me to close my eyes, with my hands on the piano, and play anything! I DID! My embarrassment turned into tears of joy! After 1-2 yrs later - thinking of myself still, as a beginner (again), Howard asked me what I thought of - becoming a piano teacher! I didn't understand & I had NO degrees! Howard told me I only needed a degree to teach in Public Schools! I had, NEVER - in my life, allowed someone else to help me create my own path! BUT - watching Howard, teaching me & others - he was ALWAYS SMILING! I thought that, just MAYBE - I could be smiling too, AND - get paid for that too?!? Howard took a photo of me, helped me word a flyer, AND - actually, got me my very 1st student! I was TERRIFIED! Howard told me - just show up & you will know JUST WHAT TO DO! He even, because of my deep fear - told me that IF I could not show up - DON'T! Within 6 months of waitressing & a few piano students, AGAIN! Here comes Howard! A fellow piano teacher/friend - who had 30 students - found the love of HER life, was moving out-of-state & asked Howard what to do with her business!?! He told her to give it to D.J. (ME!) We met for lunch, & within 1 week, I was a full-time piano teacher!!!!! You want a referral? GO SEE HOWARD! 😊 XoX ❤️ There is no one - BETTER!!!!!

Howard Richman is a unique and very giving piano instructor and an incredible musician. He doesn't keep any secrets...though he has plenty to share. You progress according either to your own speed or he'll push you. I have had 5 piano instructors (I'm a professional) and have found Howard to be very insightful and gifted in Classical (He plays Chopin Etudes like the wind) Jazz and Composition. His profound gift though is teaching Technical Mastery of the instrument. An example is his book- Sightreading Secrets - a real short cut to tripling your speed sight reading. If everyone were lucky enought to start with Howard as their teacher, there would be a more people playing piano masterfully and a lot less learning frustration:)

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
First lesson free $50/half hour $65/45 min $80/hr most beginners just need a half hour. So going by the hour rate is not accurate.
How did you get started doing this type of work?
When I was 15, I attended Interlochen Music Camp in Michigan. I was showing a singer friend there something about the piano and she said "you are an amazing teacher." Wow that kind of stuck and I realized that I really enjoy making the confusing simple.
What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?
If you want to pursue classical music, you would want to learn to read notes and learn how to memorize. But if you want to play pop/jazz/rock/blues (contemporary styles) you need to learn chords and styles. (NOT reading notes.) I teach ALL of the above. Many people who want popular styles assume that they should start with classical training to get a "solid foundation." But this is misguided, because the skills that you would need to play broadway showtunes and pop styles etc is completely different that what you would learn studying classical. I try to find out the ultimate goal of the student on the very first lesson to make sure we start out on the right track. That is not to say that you eventually couldn't do both classical AND pop styles, but usually people tend to veer towards one or the other. It is helpful if you have thought about this a bit before you contact me so we can jump right in and not waste too much time.
