What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
I initially talk with the parent about the needs of their student over the phone. Based on my knowledge of my coaches' backgrounds, I reach out to the best-fit coach and set them up with the student. The coach visits the family and performs an initial, free consultation and assessment to verify that the match will work. Following the initial consultation and signing of a tutoring contract (no prepayment necessary except for Skype), the coach continues to meet with the student for as many sessions as deemed necessary. There can be cancellation at any time, but typically, students receive help for a full semester minimum.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I am pursuing a Master's Degree in Secondary Math Education at the University of Colorado Denver. I teach 7th-12th grade math at a small school in Northeast Colorado. Prior to starting Raising The Bar, I received all three levels of the CRLA Tutoring Certification. I often share the best teaching strategies to my staff so they can help students in the best ways possible.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your service? If so, please share the details here.
We charge $36/hr for 1-1 tutoring. Skype, which is now a very popular and convenient option, is $30/hr. Skype is typically prepaid for at least 4 hours at a time, and the time used is deducted after every session.
How did you get started doing this type of work?
As a community college instructor teaching fundamental mathematics, I noticed several students who were really in need of extra tutoring, but were not eligible because of the requirement that students must have a 'C' or below to qualify. Students wanted affordable tutoring services to supplement their studies. After two years of tutoring through the school, I was getting so many requests for my help that I thought to myself, "I need more tutors to help me serve these students!" And that was where Raising The Bar Academic Coaching was born.
What types of customers have you worked with?
Most of our services assist students in the areas of math and science (Fundamental Math, Algebra, Trigonometry, Calculus, Physics, and Chemistry), but we additionally emphasize proven study skills and organizational techniques for students to boost their overall academic performance.
What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?
When searching for a tutor, it is important to look for a knowledgeable and friendly individual who can share more than the answers. Raising The Bar Academic Coaching hires coaches who are confident in their content and fun to learn from. We use various teaching strategies that incorporate white boards, colored pens, pictures, and step-by-step instruction so our students receive information in a way that works for them. Hiring a teacher or current [college-age] student as a tutor is probably one of the best decisions a parent can make. This is because these men and women are able to relate to the student and also can give the best advice on how to study for tests, how to take notes, and how to be successful with the current academic demands.
