FAQs
- What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
For a variety of reasons, (which I would happy to discuss further upon request) I do not take insurance. While it is a great choice to help with the investment in individual counseling, typical health insurance policies do not cover marriage counseling. I am committed to working with all clients to find a way to make counseling work within a budget. If cost is an issue, please contact me to discuss ways we may be able to work together to make it possible.
- What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
State law requires the signatures of both client and therapist on a couple of documents outlining the scope, limitations and regulations concerning therapy. Once those are understood and signed, I ask clients to explain as best they can what they're struggling with and how they see counseling as being helpful. The first couple of sessions are spent getting to know one another, asking and answering questions and helping each other understand the scope of what the work might look like, and what my expectations are. I may ask if the couple would like to take a standardized assessment to give me more information about how they function together. As I start to know my clients better, I am able to model what it is I am asking them to do with and for each other - hear deeply, reflect back, understand what's not being said as much as what is, and offer a clarifying viewpoint on issues that seem clear but really aren't. In addition, I am able to offer powerful shifts in perspective and personal skills that help couples connect in ways they never thought possible before.
- What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have an M.A. in counseling from an accredited graduate school, as well as numerous trainings and certificates in widely researched and accepted modalities of couples therapy, including the PREP® method and The Couples Institute training, and am certified to administer the Prepare/Enrich® marriage assessment. In addition, I have significant familiarity with the major foundational theories in couples therapy, including Emotionally Focused Therapy and The Gottman Method.
