Introduction: Matthew Lei is a cellist currently based in Greeley, Colorado. Presently, he is an undergraduate cellist currently studying with Dr. Gal Faganel (former principal cellist of the Phoenix Symphony) at the University of Northern Colorado. In the past, he has also studied with Mr. David Short (Freelance cellist). Furthermore, his summer teachers include Dr. Jonathan Spitz (Principal cellist of the New Jersey Symphony and professor at Rutgers University) and Mr. Benjamin Karp (professor at the University of Kentucky). Formerly a member of the Denver Young Artists Orchestra, Front Range Youth Symphony, the 2017 Brevard Concert Orchestra, and the 2018 Brevard Symphony Orchestra, as well as the Colorado All State Orchestra and Western States Honor Orchestra, Matthew is currently a cellist in the UNC Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Dr. Russell Guyver. An enthusiastic performer, he is willing to perform in virtually any scenario and can make accommodations so as to best satisfy a client's needs. His passion for playing is also evident in his teaching, where his personalized approach offers students a strong foundation and love for music. Furthermore, he teaches at student's homes for their convenience. Matthew takes great pride in spreading the joy of music to others around him. It is his belief that the joy and emotion which music can evoke in any given scenario to be one of the greatest human experiences. Throughout his adolescent years, Matthew was very fortunate to have fantastic instructors and mentors that have allowed for his growth as a musician, therefore it is his hope to inspire others in this same way through his teaching and performing.

Matthew was super respectful, he made sure he was 100% able to commit before agreeing to play in my small ensemble, and he was well prepared when we got together for rehearsal. He played with great expressiveness and clarity, and I would definitely recommend him for consideration in any group or as a solo performer!
