Pond Installation & Garden Bed: "We recently had Denise and Joe of AJM, replace a backyard water feature with a new, expanded pond/waterfall feature. At first we weren't sure we wanted to take on the expense, but Denise and Joe presented us with a stunning design, as usual, one too good to pass up. And then, with a few minor adjustments, they worked with us to make the cost affordable and we gave them the green light to proceed with the project. In less than a week, they transformed a dirt pit into an elaborate backyard paradise. Landscape Design & Garden Installation: “After living in our house for nearly 3 years we decided it was time to make some upgrades to the landscaping. By chance, we attended the Stamford Home Show in March and collected information from numerous landscapers. We followed up with a few and interviewed them at our house. All had years of experience and some good ideas but no one took the time and care to listen to what we wanted and come up with the kind of detailed and beautiful design that Denise Martin of AJM Earth did. From the first moment, it was obvious that Denise and Joe Martin not only offered a full service package of landscape design, hard scape design, execution and maintenance, but that no client was too small or unimportant. The other vendors could barely be bothered with us unless we would shell out a lot of money before even getting to know what their design plans would be. Unlike the other vendors, the Martins were never too busy to answer phone calls, emails, and texts right away. They lavished us with time and attention every step of the way. It was clear from the outset who had presented us with the best designs and who would provide the kind of customer service we needed. Throughout the process we were amazed at the attention we got. Denise Martin and AJM Earth – an incredibly effective small landscape team – have given me back the garden started 25 years ago and all but lost of late to benign neglect and some overly successful Sea Oats. The combination of horticultural and excavation experience was just what this project needed. My initial inquiry was answered right away and we met to survey the “garden” just a few days later. This fact alone is telling of how very professional, organized, and responsive AJM Earth is. Denise and her husband Joe, as well as third team member Carlos, were great about listening to what I wanted as well as suggesting innovative solutions for what else was needed – and then delivering on schedule and on budget. In late September, the heavy equipment rolled in and all the overgrown beds were “grubbed out”, large stone steps were assembled to my exacting specs, and an amazing Gabion basket wall (one of those innovative suggestions) now permanently shores up an old wood retaining wall. Finally, a back yard screening border was planted with some of my favorite trees and shrubs. All this was accomplished by the team of three who seem to do the work of ten. And do it happily! Whatever your landscaping goal, whether you have no fixed notion or, like me, know what you want but need a ton of help to achieve it, Denise and her team are the ones to call. Originally this area was an open space full of junk. I envisioned being able come back here and turn it into a place of serenity and peace. My husband and I tried to do it as a DIY project, but it soon grew beyond what we could handle. A friend recommended that I check out AJM Earth, where I met with Denise. She asked if she might offer a suggestion and came back with some designs that were stunning. I realized that there was no question, we just had to start from scratch. Her first sketch was spectacular. It was exactly what I wanted; what I’d seen in my mind’s eye, but alas, we could not afford the price. Denise said she’d go back and try to work within my budget. She returned with a second set of sketches that again, just blew me away. Her idea of the rain-wall was far less expensive than the water feature in the original design. It was wonderful. It was something I had never thought of. It was unique, dramatic and so very, very distinctive. From that point on, it was the only thing that belonged there. This project began with me totally scattered. I had a vision, but no idea how to make it a happen. It was well beyond my expertise. Through my words and pictures, AJM Earth captured my vision and turned it into reality. As a psychotherapist, I have to see what other people see in their own mind. When it comes to art, this is what I needed and what other people need. You can have an idea in your head, but to get it to become reality is the challenge… AJM Earth is the company that can do it for you. Our prices are on a per project basis and can be an all inclusive package or a per hour installation.
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
Each client is worked with closely, developing the vision as we walk off the property, taking photos and developing sketches to bring that vision to life. Some have no idea what they are looking for, others have the vision and we make it happen. But each client is as involved as they want to be, and are kept informed every step of the way.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
My husband and I have owned and operated our excavating business for 35 years and my husband holds a home improvement contractors license for just as long, licensure is not available or required in excavation. I have worked in the landscape design/horticulture professionally with our family run business for the past 5 years, and have been an avid gardener for decades. I have received my tree & shrub pruning training thru the New York Botanical Gardens and my certification in horticulture and landscape design from the New York Botanical Gardens.
