Introduction: I’ve been tutoring online exclusively since 2010. My complete CV and PRAXIS scores, as well as a list of colleges my previous students have attended and more specific information on payment, appear on my website. Students generally love working with me, and their parents always do. ...Or maybe they're just lying to me. 8^) I generally love the subject material, and I love interacting with teens: they're often snarky and sarcastic, and they like to think counter to the standard norms. I offer a free, 30-min session so that you can gauge the online setup and see if you're comfortable with how it works.

I am not a math person. I was incredibly anxious about preparing to study for the GRE after not taking a math class in three years. I'd interviewed other tutors, who all had their own ideas of how a study plan should be done. Dave was the first tutor who listened to my desire for how I wanted to set up my study plan and respected my wishes. He patiently went over questions that I'd missed on GRE practice tests. He encouraged me to reach the correct answer on the own by talking through the logic of each problem, but he always thoroughly explained questions that I didn't understand. Through Dave's support and broad knowledge of math, I was able to achieve the score that I needed.

I came across Dave Markham on a recommendation from a fellow parent and hired him to tutor my elder son in math. In Geometry he raised his grade from a D+ to an A-, quite a feat! He always showed up exactly on time and was uber reliable, conscientious and fabulous. He brought all his own computer gear and teaching techniques. We used him for 4 years from 9th through 12th grades, tutoring in Algebra 1+2, Geometry, Trig and Calculus. We also used him for Chemistry. My younger son is now tutoring with him via his online system, rather than in person. It works great too, his grade having gone from a C to an A. Dave is honest and hardworking and really helps the kids understand the subject matter. We are so grateful for him. I highly recommend him with the utmost enthusiasm. If you can get Dave, you're really lucky.

Dave is everything you would want a tutor to be: patient, extremely knowledgeable, understanding, prompt, available and much more. He truly cares about the student and their understanding of the subject matter. He allows the student to be an active participant in the tutoring and tailors his teaching style to fit that student's needs. He was my tutor for Chemistry. I am a person who absolutely hates Chemistry and with Dave's teaching, I was able to understand it so much better. He encouraged me to ask questions that I would normally be too shy to ask in a classroom setting for the fear of sounding stupid. He not only helped me develop a strong foundation in Chemistry, he was willing to even review concepts from other related subjects that I never mastered before. Anyone who is fortunate enough to have Dave as a tutor would not regret it.

Good tutor! On time, professional and very knowledgeable. My daughter had her first tests this week showing real progress and said she felt like she actually understood for the first time in awhile and it was great to see her so happy and more confident!

We're just at the start of Dave's sessions with my daughter, but so far he has been professional yet friendly, clear, and able to explain things in terms she readily understands. My interactions with him have been highly satisfactory too; he has answered my questions promptly and fully, and the online method seems to be working well.

  • What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

Missed sessions are charged 50% of the scheduled time. I prefer to be notified of any cancellations by the evening prior to an appointment, but I understand illnesses don't present until the morning of, so that's certainly an allowable exception. Any sessions cancelled the day of an appointment that aren't illness/emergency related are generally charged the 50% missed-session fee.

  • What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

I offer a free, 30-min session so that the student can get a sense of how the online setup works. It may be a bit different from home-schooling setups used during the pandemic, as it’s voice-only communication coupled with, from the student’s perspective, an on-screen whiteboard.

  • What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

I have an undergraduate degree from Dartmouth in physics/education, and I have an MAT (Master’s of Arts in Teaching) from Vanderbilt in physics. At different times, I’ve been certified to teach in Tennessee and in California, but those certifications have long expired, as I’ve been living in Connecticut while tutoring online for the past decade. I’ve worked with Macmillan, Learningmate, and KhanAcademy; a complete list of educational organizations that I’ve worked with through the years appears on my website.
