James Stevens is an expert in his field, he immediately spoke from a knowledge base that was beyond what I expected when looking to have some trees taken down, species, characteristics, etc. I got schooled around my yard and was instantly comfortable with him . From a business standpoint, James is a honest a man as I have ever met and his prices were fair and reasonable. His liability and workers comp insurance paperwork was in order before he arrived on site to do the work. He and his crew took down three large trees, each with hazards in the way - a shed, a neighbors fence, and the house. James and his crew arrived when they said they would and took the trees down methodically and efficiently. The crew wore hardhats, eye & ear protection, and operated safely. As agreed all the wood was cut to 22" for firewood, the brush was chipped up and taken away. I had expressed concern about lawn damage, so they put plywood down on my lawn where the boom truck was. When the job was complete, the wood was piled the yard raked and blown off. Everything went exactly as he said it would. I have worked with enough contractors to know how rare it is to be able to say that. People are always quick to give a bad review - maybe to warn others, I wanted to give A Cut Above a strong positive review to give credit where its due. If you need tree work done, its the best call you can make. Thank you James.

James and the crew did a phenomenal job removing 4 large maples and one HUGE maple. He did an incredibly thorough job, even limbing and removing a few dangerous branches he happened to notice in the area. Two of our neighbors took note of the efficient and neat work being done and hired A Cut Above on the spot to remove some of their trees. (hooray for us!) We had plans to pick up sticks and mow the lawn the following day, but our yard was actually neater after the tree removal than before. The crew even left us some split wood and small logs stacked for seasoning, and removed the larger logs we weren't interested in. If you're looking for a professional tree service who will take care to leave your property in better shape than when they arrived, A Cut Above are the people to hire. Looking forward to working with them again!

My wife and I needed 9 trees removed out of our backyard in Southington, Connecticut. We called several tree companies and only two were willing to come to view the job and give us an estimate. We knew it was going to be a very difficult job, but James Stevens, the owner of A Cut Above Tree Service in Plantsville, CT, came up with a very clear plan and a reasonable quote given the complexity of what we were asking. The plan was to use a (very tall!) crane to basically 'pluck' the trees out of the backyard and deliver them to for chipping and logging. Very impressive to watch. We also asked for pruning on one of our bigger trees. From the delivery of the estimate to the day-before notification, the communication was timely and clear (thanks, Ashley!). On the day of the job, the crew was on time, ready to work, and stayed until the job was completed (including a significant amount of clean-up, which was much appreciated). Furthermore, in the middle of the job, we asked them to take out another tree and they readjusted their plans on the fly. They, of course, added to their original estimate for the extra work, but it was very reasonable (particularly after we saw how much work the additional tree turned out to be). Everyone was so friendly, very professional, and a pleasure to work with. James also took the time to talk about the health of some of our other trees, just so we could keep an eye on them. I can't recommend this tree service highly enough to anyone looking for tree service big or small.

FAQs

  • What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

New customers can call or text to schedule a free estimate. We’ll assess the work, provide a detailed quote, and once approved, schedule the job for prompt, professional service.

  • What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

The best advice I can give any customer is to always confirm that your contractor carries active workers’ compensation and liability insurance—it protects you and your property if an accident happens on the job.
