About
I believe music changes everything in life and I am very passionate about teaching others to help fulfill their musical desires. I teach all levels and styles of guitar and bass and customize the lessons to the students interests and goals. I use technical exercises along with song learning to achieve their goals while making it fun. I teach using standard notation or tablature or both. I have a Bachelors degree in Guitar from the Hartt College of Music and have been teaching, performing and recording music for 30 years. Many of my students have gone on to music school and performed all types of music around the world. Seeing a student get to place they never thought they'd get to and watch them shine on to even better things. And also eventually get to see them perform either professionally or just for fun.

I wrote a theme song for a Chinese student association at Yale. I contacted Jamie at Thumtack. He is professional and patient with my requirements. I indeed had bothered him by email a lot because I was not familiar with his style and how things can work out. I was not very impressed until our band came to his studio and recorded the song. He is a little old school but definately experienced! I still remember that he said because he thinks hearing is the most important in music, he insisted using recorder and his ear to finish recording and mixing. I was amazed by how he mixed the song solely by ear! The song is a hit after releasing! I appreciate Jamie's work and respect his attitude toward music. Thanks Jamie!

Jamie is very professional - great at organizing songs for recording, uses his technology very well and the outcome is as good if not better (and less expensive) than a large recording studio we tried out.

Sherstudios is a one stop shop for either the budding musician to the gigging professional. It is owned and operated by Jamie Sherwood who is the consummate professional in both music instruction and production/recording. I have been taking lessons (guitar/bass) with Jamie since high school and I can attest that he is the real deal and gives his all to every student and client at any skill level, beginner to professional. Be it jazz, classical finger style, rock, blues, etc... Mr. Sherwood is a classically trained multi-instrumentalist that will help you to transcend into the musical plane and have you sounding like a pro in no time (as long as you put in the effort too)!!! If you're looking to embark on a musical journey there is no better place to start than Sherstudios. A comfortable, safe, and pleasant environment where your musical aspirations can begin to take flight. You couldn't ask for a better mentor, trust me!!!

I've been working w SherStudios for about two months. Jamie is great! He got into the teaching instantly, from the first lesson, and the time is always organized very well. Thus far, the lessons follow the same trajectory, so I know what to expect. This structure has helped me also to optimize my practice time at home. He gives clear instructions for home practice and (obv) helpful techniques on technique (or lack of it, in my case, haha) in-person, which is something one ABSOLUTELY needs an in-person instructor for. He's always professional, the lesson space is comfy, and very reasonable price. He's patient and obviously an experienced teacher and not just a person who plays but incedentally teaches. I have paralyzing stage fright and seize up all the time but he always lets me gather myself without feeling too ridiculous. (This skill is MOST imperative! He's seen it all before!) Jamie keeps it all on-track and I feel like I have made obvious progress and that the lessons are absolutely worthwhile and a sound investment of my $ and time (I live a considerable drive away). Jamie is def the dude to look to if you wanna learn to play things w strings.
