Introduction

If you’re looking for someone with professional training and a wide range of artisanal experience, I’ve been a custom furniture maker / cabinet builder for over 25 years. I studied industrial design at the Polytechnic Institute in Frankfurt, and then survived a 4 year apprenticeship in woodworking in Wiesbaden, Germany over 30 years ago. I traveled around Western Europe working in many small studios for almost ten years before returning to the states to open my own studio. I have a broad array of experience and expertise gained from those years. I combine different hard woods, fine veneers, metal, leather & skins, extraordinary finishes and extremely precise design to create something completely custom for my clients. I love what I do, so every morning when I leave to work, I’m going out to play. I have a small studio and only a few men and women working for me, so my overhead is low, and my bids are competitive.

I am very pleased with my service with Robert. He changed my cabinets and reinstalled the previous countertop at a reasonable price and did it all in one day. He accommodated my schedule as well. Very glad I found him for the job.

Hired him back in December for a small $1500 cabinet install project, but didn't end up working out so I ultimately got a refund. Five months of delays for a number of reasons (family/sick/weather/unfinished work). I live in lower Manhattan, and I think he changed his mind after I hired him once he learned where I live and just kept delaying until I ultimately called it off.

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
My pricing is fair and I always give ranges. Generally, I’ll price what I think I’ve been asked for, another price for a les expensive alternative, then options representing improvements on the project. I try to break things down so they can see where the money is going.
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
Phone call, sketch, phone call, more focused Sketches and ballpark estimates, retainer, finalized drawings and firm pricing, then some hard work.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
Four year apprenticeship in a German cabinet shop and three years studying industrial design in the Frankfurt School of Design. And 30 years of building cabinetry, furniture, and period paneled rooms.
