Hired prorem to fix a crack between our kitchen and dining room area due to house settling. We were thinking of putting the house on the market. He stated he would spackle, sand and paint it for $390 including materials. Two men came to fix the crack. They spackled, sanded and painted it all within a couple hours. The spackle peeled a couple hours after due to painting over wet spackle and I then sent him pictures and he said they would be back to finish as the job wasn't completed. He originally stated that it would be spackled and then let dry for a day or 2, but apparently they changed their minds and tried to get it done in a couple hours. Later on in the evening as that paint on the ceiling dried it became evident that there were significant streaks through the kitchen, dining/living room. The paint did not extend all the way to the wall. Several areas were missing paint such as over the curtains. Apparently upon his return it came to be known that they mixed and used different types of paint. Even though in the quote it included paint. Had I known it would have included leftover paint from who knows where I would have purchased my own. He came back and spackled the crack once again this time letting it dry then the same 2 gentlemen that painted the ceiling cameback to sand and finish the job. After completion the crack was still quite evident. I hired him to fix the crack in the ceiling. He said he quoted me to spackle sand and paint and he fulfilled his obligation. I said but the crack is still there and that is why I hired you. He's stated he did what he said he was going to do. Then I asked him "why did I hire you to spackle sand and paint."He said to fix the crack. The only reason I hired someone was to fix that crack so it would be a smooth and seamless ceiling. He immediately asked how I was going to pay, check or cash? And that he could leave me some more paint. Later on I found out that the proper way to fix this cracked due to settling in the house was to prep surface apply mesh and then spackle over that and sand evenly. He either does not know how to fix a basic crack due to settling of the house or just tried to do it as quickly as possible. It was evident as they tried to paint over wet spackle on day one. Now I am left with the same crack that might look 20% better. I now have to find someone else to come and properly fix this. All said and done I am out $390. The spot paint job on the ceiling to hide all the lines from the assortment of paints does not look good. And the crack is still there. And he still states he fulfilled his obligation and was more interested in how I was going to pay him then the poor quality of the work. If you are looking for a 1/2 ass job on a house that is not yours then this is the person to hire. If this is your home and you appreciate quality work I would not recommend him. Anyone is more than welcome to come and see his work if they are thinking of hiring him. It will be a few more months before I can afford to hire someone to correct it. John was provided a very fair price to paint his living room, dining room, kitchen, and hallway ceilings along with spackling a 12 long cracked joint. After performing the work as estimated, it was discovered the drywall paper had separated and would need to be cut out and replaced with sound drywall. John R. was unwilling to do this, thus his dissatisfaction.
John is a great guy with tons of experience and great craftsmanship. A pleasure to work with.Nov 7, 2017Verified
