About
Having grown up in NYC I learned a thing or two about "multi-function." When space is at a premium it's good to make the most of it -- but it doesn't mean that you have to sacrifice the aesthetic. I enjoy creating with repurpose, to create the unexpected. I really enjoy the relational aspect of my work, and the discovery. Design is understanding the elements to a puzzle -- and that translates to the information the client provides. It should be a collaboration between designer and client. My satisfaction comes from helping you to create a refuge; a beautiful, functional space.

Nancy is fantastic! She just did a makeover for me that took my breath away. I am a potter and have a workshop in my garage - however, I was crammed into a corner surrounded by bikes, dining table tops, stacked chairs and paint cans. Her re-envisioning of the space makes me smile every time I open the door - actually every time I merely think of it. She had contractors put in a double casement window that looks out onto the garden, orange tree and pool - cranked open the breeze is lovely. She moved cabinets from one wall to another, moved, shelves, and moved cubbies, and installed a fold-down table for kneading clay. Somehow she also came up with an incredible motorized device that lifts up and stores bikes horizontally on the ceiling. (I mean, I never thought it could possibly be so out of the way.) She designed a padded cart to store and move heavy table tops, so that they can sit out of the way by the wall underneath the new cabinet placement... I could go on. Nanci has a great sense of how to utilize space and she is genius with gizmos. If it doesn't exist, she'll design it. She's fab with color, she's non nonsense with contractors - and get things right. She's made me really happy with this. I'll use her again.

Because we're on different parts of the West Coast (I head an architectural firm in Seattle and Nanci is currently based in Los Angeles), working with Nanci has most always been for me, from a distance...with her consulting on projects my office is involved in, primarily residential remodels...which is why what she brings to the table, and how she brings it, is all the more impressive to me. She's incredibly quick to identify the challenges and opportunities presented by an existing context, and always extraordinarily creative in how she marries the two...and she's never failed to elevate the final product. And the experience getting to that final product, the resulting build out and furnishing, is always one of generous give and take, thoughtful input and criticism...always a true collaboration. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Nanci...

Nanci is a terrific designer. She has a remarkable sense of space, flow, light, color and materials. I was struggling with a remodel of a century old structure into condos and was having problems with placement of doors, letting in natural light, making sufficient space for 21st century closets, ensuite bathrooms and so on. In a very short time Nanci had come up with solutions that work so well, we are now implementing them all. She is a joy to work with, communicates clearly, is super smart and is very creative. Highly recommended.

Nanci has a finely tuned sense of how materials catch light, how they feel in use, how their colors and textures lead the eye around a space. Her choices in selecting objects to populate a space extend her designs to capture surprise and at the same time convey comfort. Her work in our small spaces changed our attitudes towards our rooms. When I've seen her work with architects I'd wished I'd had the land and budget to underwrite a new building. Maybe someday.

I had a good experience with Nanci Grant. She designed and supervised the building of a new fireplace with a Venetian plaster finish and integrated bench. It was a fairly involved project, including demo of the existing mantle, pushing out a wall, and bringing a gas line in. She made sure everything was done right, and the end result is stunning.

FAQs

  • How did you get started doing this type of work?

My mother was a decorator and a great art collector, so I had grown up with design and beautiful pieces. I also knew from a young age that I loved colors, and was always interested in creating palettes. There is something mysterious to me about how color psychologically effects a person. And more than anything, I perceive a large part of my job as being an educator -- a choice or a purchase is is easy when you understand what you are looking at in terms of quality, and how one thing relates to another. But ultimately, I am the student -- because I learn so many interesting things from my clients!

  • What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

Don't be put off if a designer asks for more information before offering a quote. It's to everyone's benefit. That way, the designer can be more accurate in assessing the scope of the job, and how much time is needed for resourcing and shopping, drawings if necessary, and the coordination of vendors. The designer is being vigilant.

  • What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

If you want to work with a professional Interior Designer, consult one before you start your project. Often consumers go it by themselves, only to discover they are in over their heads! When a designer is called in after the fact, often we have to function as "the clean-up crew" which means we are back-tracking. In essence, that means you will spend more of your hard-earned money than you should be. To do it right, it requires knowing what to focus on first, and building the room from there. And ultimately, you will have the use of a functional room much sooner!
