I had a tree taken down (approx 20ft) due to work I had done on my properly and needed to have it hauled away. I provided photos of the tree before and after to demonstrate the side of the tree while it was still standing and also provided photos of the tree in the current state (cut up and piled by my shed). Thumbtack “estimated” the job at $1300. This vendor came to my home to see it in person and confirmed he could do it for $1300. When I raised issue with the price, he said it would cost that much due to the price of gas and his need to bring the wood chipper. And then he said he’d cut me a break and do it for $800. When I told him I’d received another bid for $175 based on the same pictures and same “thumbtack estimate of $1300”, he said well I hope that guy doesn’t just leave it down the road somewhere. The point? Don’t try to rip people off! We’re not talking about charging $400 for a $175 job but nearly 8x the value of the job. Let the buyer beware for sure!
