I needed a small tree removed and the area cleaned up. The three gentlemen that showed up did an awesome job for what I believe was a very fair price.

Hired on Thumbtack

Hired on Thumbtack

After signing up with thumbtack we receive responses from several contractors within the hour. We decided to get 3 estimates. Part of a tree had broken off and we decided we wanted pruning on 4 trees. First contractor came and provided an estimate of $800, GGS Tree and Lawn services LLC responded via email with an initial estimate of $699 based on info I had provided. Service tech/John came out to inspect the trees and we explained what we needed done, showed him one of our neighbors trees for an example and he offered us an estimate of $750. Because we felt that the offer was good and being in business for 18 years, also prior contractor had told us they had no chipper and John explained they did and this job wasn't considered a difficult job, we decided to cancel our 3rd appointment with another contractor for an estimate and hired GGS. The offer was confirmed with written contract via email attachment "4 Tree Pruning/ 5th. length, 5 ft. circumference/Pruning, all dead/hazardous limbs will be removed from the grounds and total debris will be removed. 72 hours work process." We made an initial payment of $350, and service date of July 1st was provided. John and another worker arrived around noon that day to start the job. No chipper, but trailer to remove limbs and debris. That evening John advised they would be back bright and early, he stated the 2nd tree was almost completed and they would finish the job the next day. We looked to see what was done, 1 tree had 2 branches removed and no pruning. The 2nd tree was pruned but not completed. Around 10:30 AM the following morning my husband called John to see what the status was, advised him we needed to talk about the pruning, we felt that the tree we were told was completed was not pruned. We thought they would be here early, John said they had to go and finish up another job site and would be here within 1.5 hours. John arrived at 1:50 PM, we discussed our dissatisfaction with the tree that had the 2 branches removed. He stated there had to be a miscommunication, he thought all he had to do was cut those branches off so they would not hang over the back deck. We explained to him that we had ask for the pruning all around and the written estimate was given for that particular request as well. He felt he underestimated the job but stated he wanted to make us happy and would finish the pruning job on the one tree, work on the other 2 remaining trees in the back first before he returns to the tree in question. John and his partner plus 2 teenagers started working in the yard. Around 4PM I noticed that the trailer was loaded and it appeared the crew was about to leave. I approached John and ask if they were leaving, he stated yes, he needed to talk to my husband and me to explain the situation. He stated that he underestimated the job, his office is pulling him off our site since there was another job that apparently paid more, and they wanted to negotiate a higher price with us. They never touched the tree that had the two branches cut off. They finished the 2nd tree that was incomplete the first day, and pruned 1 additional tree. He stated based on the 2 fully pruned trees they completed, that should be satisfying the down payment we paid of $350. There will be no balance to be paid, he can negotiate for 1 additional tree to be pruned for and additional $250 which would leave the 4th tree (with the 2 branches cut off) left as is. The job would have to be rescheduled to a later date since they needed to work on other job sites first, our job wasn't considered a priority, a date would have to be determined later. In order to complete the entire job as initially requested, he would have to pull the chipper off another job site and the price would have to be adjusted much higher than previously quoted in order to make this profitable for them. The crew was supposed to show up bright and early and didn't arrive until 1:50 PM, by 4:15 the trailer was loaded, and job site cleaned up, how did they expect to get the job finished in 2 hours? John stated that because thumbtack provided the intial estimate of $699 they had to stay within a reasonable range of that initial estimate, that is why they decided to do this job without a chipper and therefore is taking much longer than previously thought. Looking at my email, the estimate did not come from thumbtack, it came from GGS Tree and Lawn Services, and a visual inspection was done by John prior to the final offer and a contract detailing the service was provided. I dont think Thumbtack is the one to blame here, they had nothing to do with the estimate. My husband called Nancy Dufresne, she confirmed that they would not complete the job as agreed. They would consider to do 1 more tree for an addition $250 and leave the 3rd tree as is regardless of what our contract says, and could not provide a date for completion. The only positive thing I can say is John and his partner were very friendly, they cleaned up very well after themselves, John did take the blame for underestimating the job and said he is responsible for that. I do feel that this company however has no integrity. If you quote a price, provide a contract detailing the terms, you are obligated to complete the job as quoted. If they had completed the job as it should had been done, I would be held accountable to provide prompt payment for the job completed. I feel this goes both ways. GGS broke the contract for a higher paying job. I am now left to find another contractor to get mew new quotes for the 2 trees that need pruning. The crew was supposed to be at our job site bright and early on both days, they were hours late both days and quit the job the 2nd day after approx. 2 hours of work. I would not recommend this company to anyone.

GGS Management - Although our company has had a great ability to avoid being victims over our many years of business. We have at times come across scamful dishonest individuals looking to receive more services than contracted for. Our company has a proven track record of fairness, integrity and quality workmanship. -(To many untruths to justify)-
