Sorry this pro can’t do your job, but we know other pros who can.
Introduction: I offer computer-assisted music instruction which saves time in the actual lesson. Students receive immediate feedback on what they are doing on the computer and it is very entertaining. They constantly have tutorials, then drill and review many different concepts which they need to know instantly while playing. I have a degree in Music Education and in Piano Performance. Many people know how they were taught piano many years ago, but have not taken the classes in how to teach piano, phrase questions, help students make discoveries on their own and develop and evaluate curriculums. I earned the designation "Certified Teacher of Piano with Experience" from the Florida State Music Teachers Association (fmta.org). I love music and being able to share that love with my students in many different ways. Most of my students have told me that my love is infectious and they can't help but be excited about learning!

As an adult student I was concerned about how a piano teacher would teach me - would it be no different than the school age children who are a much larger part of their student "pool"? Betty made it clear from the beginning that her approach is different for different students, and it was evident that her pedagogical skills play very heavily into her approach to teaching. As an educator myself, this is something that made it an easy choice when choosing my piano teacher. Add to this her experience and involvement in the local music community and there was no question what my choice would be. I have been with Betty for nearly three months at this point, and I am very pleased with her as a teacher as well as my progress under her tutelage. I would highly recommend her to anyone, especially adults, who are interested in piano lessons.

After two years of studying under Betty, I feel that I have progressed and learned far more that I would have expected. She works as a teacher and a partner, making sure I challenge myself while not exceeding my level of comfort with the material. Her ability as a teacher allows her to give constructive feedback and to encourage at the same time. I leave every lesson with new challenges I know I can achieve, and if I can't or have difficulties she is available to provide direction and encouragement as well. As someone trained and educated as a teacher, I can say without exception that Betty's pedagogical skills are what make her stand out. Not only is she an accomplished musician in her own right, having the ability to translate that skill into a teaching environment places her head and shoulders above the typical piano teacher. i can't recommend Betty enough as a piano teacher. She has done a wonderful job for me and I look forward to the future learning from her.

Betty has been giving piano lessons to my 2 daughters for almost over a year now. She is a great teacher who really knows how to get the kids motivated. Constantly keeps them focused and challenged. Prior to this we had a tough time to find the right teacher for our kids.

My daughter started her first piano lessons three months ago with Betty. She loves going to her lessons. Betty is a fantastic teacher. She is great with all the students that I have seen. She is patient and encouraging and finds ways to make lessons fun while emphasizing basic skills and teaching the importance of practice. We highly recommend her!

FAQs

  • How did you get started doing this type of work?

Growing up in a very musical and entertaining family, it was natural for me to want to join in the fun! I would run home from school and couldn't wait to get to play the piano. Having private lessons my whole life infused in me a love of all types of music. I studied piano and organ at St. Petersburg Junior College and received a B.A. in Music Education from the University of South Florida in Tampa. After teaching General Music and Chorus for a couple of years, I returned to USF to receive a second undergraduate degree in Piano Performance.

  • What types of customers have you worked with?

Customized individual piano lessons for all ages and levels along with computer-assisted music instruction. Help beginning students obtain an adequate instrument that fits their budget. Church music including weddings and funerals Accompaniment for professional musicians and for students Music for parties on piano, keyboard and/or accordion with a large repertoire of music available for individual tastes. Link up musicians in many different disciplines with potential job opportunities. Mentoring and consulting because of many years of experience in many facets of music and education.

  • What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

When looking for an educator, consider the pedagogy courses and experiences in curriculum planning with a college degree specifically in education, not just general performing. Most musicians who know how to play have not had the education to know how to teach, which is another different field. I know how to present concepts according to the learning style and age of different students and break down concepts into fun, entertaining bits that are easily accomplished.
