Hired on Thumbtack

I have a half mile long dirt/sand driveway, very bumpy, soft terrain, Florida State Paving gave me a good price, came out pretty quickly. They re-graded, and added a solid foundation, and paved the whole thing, it is so much better, me and my family couldn’t be happier. Very professional and great work.

From Google

After receiving several quotes for a driveway apron, I was disappointed at how much an asphalt apron was going to cost. I gave Florida State Paving a call and the price was so much less than I had been quoted by other contractors I was skeptical and thought there must be a miscommunication. They came out to verify the quote, on a day that others were closed, and it was no miscommunication. They beat the other guys by thousands. I ended up going with Florida State Paving and got the apron and 100 foot long driveway for less than the quotes for the apron alone from the other guys. While price is an important consideration, having a job done right is priceless. Thomas put down extra stone to make sure the job was done right. It's super solid, and I've already gotten compliments by other tradesmen.

Hired on Thumbtack

Unfortunately, our experience with Florida State Paving has been extremely disappointing and frustrating.

We hired this company through Thumbtack to complete a parking lot project for my mother-in-laws Church. Something that they were totally unaware of before the proejct began and has since been a disaster. What should have been a relatively straightforward project has resulted in repeated discussions, unmet commitments, workmanship concerns, and work that did not reflect what was discussed and agreed upon.

From the beginning, we discussed and agreed upon an angled parking layout accommodating 20 vehicles. The owner personally walked the property with me and explained how this would be accomplished. At no point before accepting our deposit and beginning the work did he indicate that the agreed-upon layout could not be completed.

After the project began, however, the owner contacted me and requested an ADDITIONAL $3,900 to complete work necessary to achieve the agreed-upon result. Although I believed this had already been contemplated in our original discussions, I agreed to the additional amount in good faith to keep the project moving.

I was later contacted and told the project was complete and final payment was due. Thankfully, I chose to inspect the work BEFORE making that final payment.

What I discovered was extremely disappointing. The lot had only 17 spaces rather than the agreed-upon 20. The spaces were not angled as agreed. Three handicap-accessible spaces had not been provided as discussed. Entrance/exit and directional markings were missing. Parking stops/bumper guards were missing, and the parking spaces were extremely narrow, creating serious usability and safety concerns.

We have now addressed substantially the SAME issues on FOUR separate occasions.

Most recently, I drove approximately 1½ hours to the church expecting to meet with the owner to resolve these serious concerns. Instead, the owner was not present and sent his teenage son to address the dispute. Considering the seriousness of the contractual and workmanship issues involved, I found this to be offensive and extremely troubling and felt it demonstrated a clear lack of accountability by the business owner.

The interaction deteriorated further when comments were made regarding my decision to use a credit card rather than cash. I subsequently received a message stating that the owner would NOT accept my credit card for payment. This was particularly concerning because the company's Thumbtack profile represented credit cards as an accepted form of payment.

I believe potential customers deserve to know this.

My complaint is not about one mistake. Mistakes happen. My concern is the PATTERN: discuss the work, reach an agreement, pay money based upon that agreement, and then receive something different from what was discussed.

I thank God that I did not simply make the final payment when I was told the project was complete. Had I done so without first inspecting the work, I believe I would have been in a significantly more difficult position trying to get these issues corrected.

Based on my experience, my advice to anyone considering this contractor is simple: GET EVERYTHING IN WRITING, DOCUMENT EVERYTHING, INSPECT EVERYTHING, AND DO NOT MAKE FINAL PAYMENT UNTIL YOU HAVE PERSONALLY VERIFIED THAT THE AGREED-UPON WORK HAS BEEN COMPLETED.

We gave Florida State Paving multiple opportunities to correct these issues. Unfortunately, after four attempts, we are now seeking assistance through Thumbtack and other appropriate channels to bring this matter to resolution.
