Introduction: Unlike some other tutors, I have a Bachelor's degree not only in Mathematics, but my concentration was in Secondary Education (Junior High and Senior High School). I obtained a state license from Pennsylvnia's Department of Education (1995) to teach mathematics. The best feeling for me is when the "light goes on" in the student's head, a big smile appears, and the student shouts "I understand now! I got it!" Being able to help people gain confidence and succes in mathematics is why I love to tutor so much.

FAQs

  • How did you get started doing this type of work?

My love of math runs in the family. My grandmother worked as a bookkeeper before computers or calculators. I absolutely HATED the way math teachers taught in my elementary and junior high schools. Mathematics was memorizing theorems, not actually learning how to use math in the real world and certainly not about learning logic. LOGIC AND REASONING SKILLS ARE REQUIRED IN EVERY FIELD OF WORK. Learning mathematics and science are the foundations of problem-solving.

  • What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

Check out the education of the tutor. Make sure they didn't just "take the course" and are now teaching or tutoring it. Great tutors and teachers take educational courses as part of their degree. What may have been easy for the student who only took the class, may be hard for the student attempting to learn the new material.

  • What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

Mathematics IS NOT A subject that can be MEMORIZED. It is unlike any other subject. It requires patience, practice and perseverance. To be able to tutor students in math successfully requires educational classes, not just to be tutored by a student who had taken the class. What may have been easy for them, may be hard for another student. Education and experience teaching both in the classroom and one-on-one are required to tutor successfully.
