I have over 25 years' experience as a English Language Arts specialist, working with elementary students through college students as well as adults seeking to improve their writing, speaking, and communication skills. I have a Master's Degree from Brooklyn College, New York. I am a published author, Level 5 TEFL instructor for ESL students, and I have trained teachers around the country in innovative writing, reading, and communication strategies.
Good communications skills - both writing and speaking - are essential to excel in today's workplace. The diverse and motivating strategies I use are supported by federal ESSA Tier 1 evidence and targeted to meet your unique goals and address learning gaps. Based on the success of my program, I've designed and led professional development training for teachers on Language Arts, creative writing and reading comprehension strategies throughout Florida for the FL Department of Education; worked as a consultant with the Miami, Broward and Palm Beach School Districts, and my non-profit educational organization was an approved provider of afterschool tutoring in English Language Arts for 8 years with federal Title I programs in NM, CA, WA, and TX. As an adjunct professor for Lesley University's creative M.Ed. program for teachers in Boston, MA, I trained teacher cohorts around the country in innovative writing strategies designed to engage, motivate and inspire students.
AREAS OF FOCUS:
WRITING & READING COMPREHENSION: I teach both students and adults writing skills including writing genres aligned with state ELA standards, as well as grammar, reading comprehension, language usage and speaking. From my many years working as a consultant in the classroom, I created the Incite to Write program, a supplementary curriculum currently used by hundreds of teachers around the country to motivate students to write and do well on state standardized writing assessments. My writing and reading comprehension strategies develop critical and creative thinking skills, curiosity, build confidence, and make learning fun. I am also a published author and have worked as an editor for other authors.
All sessions are one-on-one over Zoom, which I have found to hold students' attention better than in-person tutoring.
SPEAKING & PRESENTATION SKILLS:
Prior to entering the field of education and academia, I trained as an actor, which included 4 years of speech. I worked as a professional actor in New York for over 10 years. During this time period I started teaching public speaking and helping business professionals with presentation and speaking skills. I also work with student and adult English Language Learners, helping ESL students gain confidence in pronunciation, fluency, conversation, writing, and communication skills. I am a Level 5 TEFL certified instructor. Zoom sessions are one-on-one.
