If you want a knowledgeable, honest, caring, and hard-working HVAC specialist and crew to install and service your system, then you don't have to look any further. Steve Taranto is the absolute best and we were lucky to find him. He knows all the (lousy?) equipment out there, and recommended the equipment that he believed would satisfy our needs with the best combination of serviceability, fewest problems, and lower cost. We had to finally replace our 14 year old #$*&$$... expensive Carrier system in 95 degree heat when the 9th Bristol compressor in 14 years broke and could no longer be replaced. Our original company, Climatic Conditioning, did nothing to help us out. Steve Taranto took the time to try to get the broken Bristol compressor going so we would have some cooling while we waited for our new system. Steve gave us a very reasonable price for our new Goodman system, which has Copeland, rather than Bristol compressors, has more metal than plastic, and is made in USA. Steve and his crew worked so hard (and late into the evening) to get our new system installed and cooling within 2 days. Other company estimates we had obtained were much higher in price for the same system, and could not be installed for a week, or they proposed more expensive, Carrier or Trane systems with known compressor issues. During this process I also learned from all the proposals we received, and from Steve, how important it is for the service people to know what they are doing, and to clean their equipment after each usage, so as not to contaminate one system with oil or other remnants from another broken system, and to not overload a compressor with freon (as a previous Climatic Conditioning tech may have done to our broken compressor). When you select a large company (such as our previous use of Climatic Conditioning), you get many different service techs maintaining your system over the years, and you don't know their skills and whether they followed proper procedures. Since we had 9 broken compressors in 14 years, I suspect poor installation and maintenance could have contributed to that. We trust Steve Taranto, and we most highly recommend him.

Cool Air has the potential of becoming a major AC company, they are responsive, price wasn't least expensive nor the most expensive, but knowing they are responsive when you need them is what matters most besides price. They just need to be more organized in some minor areas. Overall, I will use them again.

I can't praise this company enough. They were on time, polite, friendly, and went above and beyond what any other company would of done for me. What they at first thought would be a half hour job, turned into a half day job due to my air conditioning unit needing more work than we thought at first. But that didn't matter to them, they worked until it was done. Not only that, but they found a way for me to afford additional parts and really cared for my needs. I have never had a company come in and show real feelings for the customer instead of what they could make off a job. I will definitely recommend this company to anyone. they restored my faith in companies. No pressure on buying what I couldn't afford. they made this experience beyond satisfactory.

I called them in the morning when my water heater was leaking out into the laundry room, they were there by lunchtime and replaced by 4pm. The tech was very helpful and the price was reasonable.

I highly recommend this company!!!! Honest Beyond Belief. So Erik came out to my home to determine a fix for a bedroom that is always 5 degrees warmer than the rest of the house. Well instead of selling me a system or anything for that matter, he did a quick check with a temperature sensor and determined that the majority of the heat load in the room was coming from the windows. The house was built in 1962 and the windows are original to the house. His suggestion was to first replace my windows and then have the attic area insulation redone. Seeing as those were already on the "To Do List", I decided to take his advice and do those items first and then (as per his suggestion) call him back if there is still an issue. Thanks for your honesty Erik! You're a rarity in the business world of today.

We came home on Sunday evening and our air out leaving us with a very smothering place. That night was miserable so I researched that night and found Thumbtack which recommend two air conditioning companies. Early the next morning I started contacting both companies and both scheduled an appointment with Sun Air Service giving me the earliest time. Richard came out and access the problem and gave me a quote. Both were close in comparison price but Richards company saw our situation and made it happen. He located the part and his service guys came out within a hour and a half with the part worked in the hot atticas well as outside and got our air working. We were so thankful and grateful to all of them for we were finally able to get a good night sleep and enjoy the comfort of our home.

My air conditioner went out in my condo during the summer months and Total Maintenance Heating and Cooling came out the same day, found the issues with my system, and had the unit up and running within a couple of hours. I would certainly give them a call again if I have any other issues. They were very friendly and professional people both in person and on the phone. The cost of services was exactly what I expected to pay when the job was complete and I was so grateful to have a cool house again! Thanks again for great service.

It was 5pm and I had just gotten home with my granddaughter. The house was close to 90 degrees. I called a couple of places and got the standard "someone will call you back". I then got on thumbtack and Gotcha was immediately responsive and said he'd be right over of I wanted him to. He arrived as promised and diagnosed the problem. He worked for two solid hours at my house in the sweltering heat and as the sun went down the mosquitoes were like pterodactyls, He didn't complain just did his job. He found that a gecko had found his demise in my ac unit. Once found it was a quick and inexpensive repair job, a trip charge is all he charged me! I was amazed and thrilled (and now much cooler). I would recommend Gotcha over and over again.

We were in the market for a new AC system and called a few different companies looking for good quality work at an affordable price. We choose Liberty Air and couldn't be happier. We got our quote promptly, and we're able to get the system installed the following day. They were very professional, keept everything clean and paid great attention to detail. The staff was so friendly and personable. I never felt that they were trying to sell me products I didn't need. I couldn't speak greater of them. Will definitely be calling them back for our next AC needs.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who fixes furnaces?

If your furnace needs to be repaired, you’ll want to find a qualified heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) repair technician. Each state has its own licensing requirements; some require all HVAC technicians to have an HVAC license, while others only require someone operating an HVAC service and installation company with employees to hold a contractor’s license. For example, in Alabama, the Alabama Board of Heating Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration Contractors regulates licensing, while in Kansas there is no state regulatory body and HVAC licensing can vary by region. For simple furnace repairs like changing out a filter, a trusted handyman can probably handle the job, but a trained professional should be hired for tasks like replacing a gas valve, installing a new inducer fan motor or other critical furnace repair jobs that involve dealing with gas leaks or other dangerous conditions. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much will it cost me to replace my furnace?

The national average for furnace replacement is between $1,800 and $2,500. The cost can range dramatically higher depending on the model of furnace you select, any repair work you require, your location and the cost of installation. Furnace installation costs can be more than the furnace itself due to the cost of doing business and the expertise needed to install the HVAC equipment. Installing a new furnace generally requires technical know-how and the proper tools and licensing. It’s best to hire a pro and budget for furnace installation rather than risk potentially unsafe DIY installation. This will ensure your home’s safety. Check to see if your HVAC contractor has the proper licensing to do the job. If you need duct repair or replacement, expect to pay more for your furnace installation costs. The price for duct repair could be an hourly rate ranging on average anywhere from $85 to $150 per hour, with additional costs for parts.

How much does it cost to have your furnace cleaned?

To keep your furnace in good working order it’s important to have it regularly cleaned. The national average furnace cleaning cost ranges from $60 to $80, though prices can vary greatly based on where you live in the country and what your furnace maintenance includes. An HVAC company may have different rates for different levels of furnace maintenance. For example, one company may offer general furnace maintenance for $79 and advanced maintenance for $138. Another company may offer a 38-point maintenance check for $89 and a 64-point maintenance check for $178. According to Energy.gov, a standard furnace cleaning and maintenance visit can include:

  • Checking the vent connection pipe and chimney
  • Checking the physical integrity of the heat exchanger
  • Adjusting the controls to provide optimum air temperatures
  • Checking the combustion chamber for cracks
  • Testing for carbon monoxide (CO)
  • Adjusting the blower control and supply-air temperature
  • Cleaning and oiling the blower
  • Removing soot and corrosion from the furnace
  • Checking the fuel input and flame characteristics
  • Sealing the connections between the furnace and the main ducts

How much does it cost to replace a gas furnace?

The cost to replace your gas furnace will vary based on the type and size of furnace you select, labor and installation costs, and any repairs your HVAC system may need. Nationally, average HVAC prices for a heating specialist range between $1,800 and $2,500. It’s important to select the right size gas furnace for your heating needs. A furnace that’s too small won’t heat your house properly, while a furnace that’s too large will run inefficiently, cycling on and off and likely breaking down sooner. HVAC specialists calculate your exact heat needs by measuring your home and incorporating variables such as the regional climate and your home’s level of insulation. Retail pricing for gas furnaces can range from $650 up to $3,000 and more. The higher the AFUE (annual fuel utilization efficiency) rating of the furnace, the more efficient it is at turning fuel into heat and the lower your carbon footprint and utility bill will be. HVAC installation costs are often based on an hourly rate and can range from under $50 to over $100 per hour, depending on the company and the furnace being installed. Higher-end furnaces cost more to install because they require added labor and expertise. For a typical installation, it might take two HVAC installation pros one day or less to remove your old furnace and replace it with a new one.

How much does it cost to have your furnace serviced?

When your furnace isn’t regularly serviced it can operate less efficiently. This increases your energy bills and also prevents your furnace from keeping your home as warm as you like. Keep your furnace properly maintained with regular service. The national average furnace service cost is between $60 and $80. Companies may offer tuneup specials that cover all the necessary testing, tightening, measuring and cleaning to keep your equipment running at top efficiency. If you have a newer system, furnace service costs may be covered by your warranty. Outside of warranty, a basic tuneup might start at $58 and a more advanced maintenance cleaning could be over $120. Here are some signs your furnace may need service:

  • The furnace has stopped functioning entirely.
  • The temperature cannot be regulated.
  • Rooms in the home are either too hot or too cold.
  • The heated air coming from the furnace smells like gas.
  • The thermostat isn’t working.
  • Strange noises are coming from the furnace.
