- What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
I do have standard pricing for several of my jobs that are very standard. I worked for a major company 8 years before branching out on my own to create Zeal Plumbing LLC, and I usually charge about 30-45% less than a major company. I can't and won't tell you that I am a "handyman" and will do something for nothing though. I am licensed plumbing professional and insured to protect you and myself. Being a real professional vs a handyman means that to run an honest company there are more business cost to keep myself legal. I have found out that you get what you pay for in my line of work, especially after fixing messes other plumbers and handymen have done along the way.
- What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
I wish that I could save my customers and me both time by quoting everything over the internet, that would be ideal for both of us, but, so many times I run into small variants that can lessen or raise the price. I don't want to be dishonest by always giving the best case scenario, and then coming out and giving bad news, like so many other plumbers do just to get their foot in the door. Prices vary for many reasons, like getting things up to code, the length of pipes, width of pipes, what types of pipes, how deep leaks or breaks are, how long issues have been going on, how accessible things are, can it be repaired, or does it have to be completely replaced? Are we really fixing the problem or putting a band-aid on things? I love to have a personal relationship with my clients and I immediately give my number out if I feel like I cannot accurately quote a standard price. Always ask your plumber if they are licensed and insured and be leery when they aren't. Once I talk to someone and get details I give them a ball park, and if I have no idea, then I normally provide a free estimate/visit to the home. I always confirm the prices with the customer before I start any work, so that there are no surprises.
