The difference between me and other technicians is that I've managed to become a 30-year computer service/support veteran through honing superior people and business skills at an early age. Being able to talk to and relate to customers is an uncommon skill among computer people because they prefer to talk with computers. I was once a stereotypical computer nerd who generally preferred to talk with computers than people, however back in the 1980s it was apparent that with so many kids learning technology from computer and hand-held games I would need to learn additional skills to ensure I had a competitive edge so I would be better positioned to stay in my career. Over time I invested in my people and business skills, achieving a Masters Degree in Business Administration, enrolling in International Residencies, teaching overseas, and actively seeking opportunities to work with a wide variety of business associates and clients. I have been fortunate to serve with peers in the industry who have brought about some of the greatest technological innovations. While you might know some of these people from the news, I prefer to remain low-key and keep my hands in the work. Over the years so many friends, neighbors, relatives, and business associates have requested my services that I decided to turn it into a side business and here I am: a highly skilled, highly qualified, highly motivated, and highly relatable computer service engineer who can take care of most any issue that you bring to me. I bring professional polish, responsiveness, and expertise rarely matched in the industry. I welcome the opportunity to serve you! For a computer guy, it is unusual to hear that I like to work with people. Having spent my career honing both my technical and people skills, working with people has truly become a significant part of who I am.

I had an external hard drive crash. Was hoping to recover some of the data; however, I did not want to spend a great deal of money as most of the info was saved elsewhere or recoverable via scan, etc. The recovery was going to be a time saver. Most of the other companies that responded stated prices of $129/hr and could not guarantee recovery. Stewart quoted a price only if he recovered data. Unfortunately, the data could not be recovered; however, I did have Stewart work on an old laptop to bring it up to date and clean up all virus, etc. issues. It was also nice to find out that Stewart used to work at a company that I had worked for and we had a lot of colleagues in common. I will keep his name on file and should I need computer services in the future, he will be my first call!

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
Not complicated. I generally try to charge between $30-100 for my work depending on the complexity. For work that will be over an extended period I charge $50/hr.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
Throughout my career I've held numerous professional certifications including A-Plus, Net-Plus, Sun Solaris Administration, MicroSoft CNA, and a variety of company-internal certifications. I've let most of those go because there are some pitfalls to relying on certification classes as they are so generic, but I've continued with company-internal certifications to date. In 2006 I graduated with a MBA from Kennesaw State University and I'm currently pursuing ITIL certification. How did you get started doing this type of work?
I was originally an Electrical Engineering major at Southern Polytechnical State University (then called Southern Tech) in Marietta. That school is now being merged with Kennesaw State University. As a part of my studies I was required to take a computer programming course (Fortran 77) for exposure into this thing called the computer industry, I guess in case the industry did something and I would have to understand what a computer did. I programmed using a DECWriter and IBM punchcards. We fed our programs into an IBM card reader to be processed on a DEC PDP 11/70 midrange Unix computer, and the results printed on a large line printer. To do a simple calculation that one would normally do on a pocket calculate or even in their head took 30 minutes or more in those days because so many students had their jobs queued up to run before class stated. At about the same time I had the initiative to get a job while in school and I applied a Radio Shack thinking my technical knowledge might be of some use in a technical store. I worked on the first Radio Shack TRS-80 Model I computer (4 Kilobytes RAM and a cassette deck for storage). In that simple system I saw the potential for what became the computer industry and I was hooked. I changed my major to computer science the next semester.
