About
My work stands out because I am very knowledgeable about math and statistics, yet I have a talent for explaining it in terms students can understand. I also am patient and relate very well to students from kindergarten through adult.
I enjoy working with people. I love when someone grasps a math concept due to my instruction. My greatest thrill is when a student tells me how well they have done on a recent test.
My tutoring goal is to have my students succeed in their math curriculum. That is why I do not charge for supplemental advice. If we are working together on a regular basis and you encounter a problem before our next scheduled meeting, just text me the problem, and I will help you immediately.
In the current environment I am remotely tutoring by phone and text or by Zoom. The student can text me the problems she/he is working on and I talk her through it and text back a solution when necessary. This method is working very well with several students. With Zoom (which is no cost to the student) we can see each other and share screens. If the student is working with an on-line application I can watch what they are doing and teach and make suggestions in real time.

We had kind of a unique situation and needed help. My son was preparing for a apprenticeship math test and had only a few weeks to prepare. My son was discouraged because he did not pass the first time he took test and we had studied a great deal. We sought out Michaels help and he responded quickly, and gave us an initial free session to go over the situation and problem and come up with a solution. Michael and my son worked very good together, Josh was discouraged and Michael gave him the confidence that he needed to move forward and preparing with Michael for test. After only a few sessions, Josh was ready to take test which was on long division and multiplication of fractions, whole numbers, mixed and decimals. After a review the night before test. I am happy to report that Josh passed the test. This was a big moment for Josh as he had just graduated this year and with all the things this years senior class had to endure, he sure needed a "pick me up" and Michael and his tutoring was there and responded in all the best ways imaginable. Josh and I want to give big thanks to Michael and would recommend him to anyone who wants to meet and work with a great tutor who really does care about his work and his students.

I was trying to study and prepare for a math placement exam at the new college I’m transferring to. Many of the tutoring places I found, to my surprise, did not even offer college tutoring. After doing some research, my dad found Michael on Thumbtack, and I’m so glad he did! After about two months of tutoring, I feel so much more prepared to take my test and I have learned a ton of new math strategies. I would definitely recommend Michael! This was my first time using Thumbtack, and it was definitely a success!

Mr Michael is an Amazing Teacher! with a great ability to introduce and explain math concepts in a manner in which the "average" person can grasp. He helped me prep for the math section of my exams for entrance into the RN program and I am now in the Nursing Program. He is still my go to when I need additional math instruction.

Mike Goodman is an exceptionally good mathtutor. He has a lot of experience working with students of varying abilities and adapts to the student's needs. His training as a professional mathematician enable him to constantly share insight and tricks about how to analyze and quickly solve a wide range of math problems. Importantly, Mike teaches good problem solving technique: students learn to follow steps (and write stuff down) so they can tackle more complex problems with confidence. Mike helped our son bring his math grade up 13 points! We will use him to prepare for the ACT and SAT math tests this summer.

Michael has made the language of math easier for my son to understand. He has tried to understand my son's learning style and then tailor the tutoring sessions in a manner that provides additional insights. Per my son, he likes that Michael provides him with the understanding behind the problem as opposed to just how to get the answer.

FAQs
What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
Pricing is straightforward on an hourly basis. In the current environment, and because I am doing all tutoring at home, I have reduced my hourly rate to $40 an hour.
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
Different process for test prep vs. classes. With classes I ask the student to bring a current homework assignment or recent test I ask what they are having problems with or ask them to work through problems so I can watch and make suggestions. For test prep I suggest that they work through a sample test before we meet so we can concentrate on the areas of greatest difficulty.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have an undergraduate degree in math and was honored to be selected for Phi Beta Kappa. I hold advanced degrees in statistics. I have taught at the university level. I was head of the training and education department of a Fortune 100 company where I led a staff of more than 100 education professionals. I volunteered for several years at our local grade school where I worked with K-5 children on math and reading and learned the way that grade schools are teaching math today.
