About
I am officially accepting in person candidates that will come to my studio in Powder Springs. I offer in person(come to me) and remote!
Thank you for stopping by my page on your journey looking for the right fit to learn the drums. I am a professional drummer with over 25 years of experience and I have been teaching for 15 years. In the Austin area, you may have seen me at The Musicians Woodshed in Bee Cave, and I have taught privately and at multiple schools in Houston. As of August 2021, I am now in the Atlanta Metro area. I do offer Zoom lessons for anyone in the country. As a professional drummer, I have toured all around the continent, played in all types of arenas, played with Billboard charting artists, Texas Regional Music Chart artists, and I hold multiple endorsements in the drumming community, as well as have been featured in Drum! Magazine.
In addition to my drum lessons, I also teach electronic music production. So if drums aren't your thing, I can teach you how to begin your electronic music career.

I’ve been working with Joe from Lions Way Studios for a couple weeks now, and he’s been the greatest! Messaged him about progressing my skills as a drummer, he responded quickly and had a lesson set up in no time. He’s a superb teacher and extremely knowledgeable, I would highly recommend him to anyone wanting to learn the drums!

I purchased lessons from Joe as a Holiday gift for my bf. My bf is self taught on the drums and has never taken a lesson.
After his first lesson my bf said he clicked very well with Joe and and that “he’s a really great guy! Very relatable and I really like his teaching style“. Thank you! I would highly recommend!

Joe delivers quality instruction that meets the needs of the learner. He communicates well and can relate to all age groups (especially teenagers)! He is professional in his approach and that transfers to his students which helps in their development. That also makes him a positive role model at the same time. He’s been teaching drums and music composition and my son always does the work to participate and move to the next learning portion of the lessons. Joe is an incredible human with a lot of talent! He is a fantastic teacher of all ages. I can’t say enough good things about him.

I always had an interest in music, especially drums, but I had no idea how to play or even read the notes. After Joe began to teach me about everything from the foundation up, I found myself improving dramatically with every lesson. I even began to be able to play along with songs that I had never even dreamed of catching up to. After some time, I decided I would try something new, and began learning music production from Joe. He taught me all the parts of production, and from there, I have been able to make multiple songs that I am incredibly proud of. Instead of taking the wheel away from you, he gives it to you and guides you on how to use it, while letting you choose your destination. He doesn’t just sit and tell you what to do and how to do it, but he completely involves you in what you are doing, teaching about the history of the music and how it has become what it is, and making jokes and having fun along the way so that no lesson is ever boring.

FAQs
What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
I know that $75/hr for one-hour lessons, $50/half hour, $250/month seems steep for drum lessons. The reason for those prices is for the fact that not only do I deliver high-quality lessons, but I provide coaching and custom curriculum that is tailored to your goals, but I also teach relevant techniques that are used in current professional standards, as well as mentorship, guidance, and leadership. I have a lot of real-life experience in this business and life experience in general, so I am here to help. No situation is too much.
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
Our first lesson is an introductory lesson. I want to hear about YOU. I want to hear about what you want to accomplish, what are your goals, what do you want to do? Not all students want a book thrown at them and say "learn this." I'm about teaching to the student, not to the curriculum. I will tailor-make the situation to your liking to keep you engaged. Life is hard, drums and music is fun.
Going forward, the way the remote lessons will work is, I will set up a Zoom link that you'll access. From there, I will film weekly videos that we go through every week and talk through it in lesson. As part of the package, I film the videos in the week between lessons, and then I create a Google Drive folder that you'll have access to at any time for your practice. It's part of the added value of the course, real time instruction with 24 hour access to all materials.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have 25+ years of professional experience in multiple genre. I have over 18 years of touring experience that has taken me all over North America. I have played clubs, large clubs, arenas, theaters, and ampitheaters. I have been featured in Drum! Magazine, and I hold several endorsements.
In terms of my electronic music production, my solo project, JD Lion, I have accumulated thousands of streams on Spotify, Amazon, Apple Music, and SoundCloud. I have released multiple albums, EPs, and singles, and I also recently became a licensed audio engineer through the University of New Hampshire
