- What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
I always enjoy meeting new students. I teach beginners working to learn the basics, as well as experienced players, trying to correct any problems and lower their score. For our first meeting, I like to get to know my students. I will determine their experience with golf and history with any other sports. I listen closely to determine their particular goals. Then I will have my students point out their self-assessed strengths and weaknesses related to the game of golf. We will discuss their physical condition and any possible limitations. It is also very important to determine if they learn best visually, verbally or by feel. I will videotape and analyze the students’ swing – looking for proper mechanics or any flaws in the swing. I will check the fundamentals, such as the grip, posture and ball position. We always set short term and long term goals and discuss the best way to achieve them. Because I am also a certified personal trainer, I will assign exercises for golf fitness in order to develop golf muscles and create flexibility for a proper swing. The first meeting is extremely important. It is the foundation for a beneficial golf instructor/student relationship that will set them on the right path. I pride myself on being a patient teacher with a keen eye for detail- sometimes the smallest tweak to a swing can make a world of difference. I want to enable my students to reach their highest potential, while they develop a love for the game.
- What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I am a Master Golf Teaching Professional (MGTF), certified by the United States Golf Teaching Federation (USGTF). There are only 400 certified USGTF “Master” teaching professionals in the world, also Titleist Performance Institute Certified. I’m a National Fitness Professional Trainer (NFPT). It is a great asset to be a golf coach, with a strong physical education background. My understanding of how the muscles work is a tremendous benefit in teaching the golf swing. My USGTF Master Golf Teaching Professional Certification training focused solely on teaching the game of golf. Many of my new clients ask me if I am a PGA member. I chose not to follow this route, because I do not want to spend time learning non-teaching relating information, such as clubhouse management and event management. I do not want to manage a golf course. Nor do I desire to play on tour. My sole purpose is to teach this amazing game to my students. I do take part in continuing education opportunities that I feel will enhance my teaching. Currently, I have a handicap of 1. It is certain that there are many teachers who score lower than me. But, I firmly believe that being a good golfer, does not make one a good teacher. I did not grow up with golf. I learned the game as an adult. My own process of learning the game has been extremely beneficial to my teaching style.
