Hired on Thumbtack

Hired on Thumbtack

This was the worst experience with someone I have hired through Thumbtack, which I have been using for years. I hired Jared to mow lawn. First he had excuses of why he had to not mulch leaves because he didn’t have proper blades. He didn’t bring a blower and left excess grass and debris all over lawn, paved areas street and drive way. He did not cut certain areas of the grass. Also a window mysteriously was broken near area he used weed whacker. He also cut down and damaged good plants with weed whacker. It looked like gave up before completing the yard. There a rake left on property in plain sight if he didn’t have one. Instead he left a mess. I paid double what I usually pay. It hadn’t been cut in awhile and was high but I expected the entire yard to be cut and left tidy. When I expressed to him dissatisfaction and first made half payment, he threatened to send me to his paralegal. I paid in full. He then kept saying he is adding to the file, including saying he can sue me for a honest review. He claimed I tried to bribe him by making partial payment because at first I said I would not leave a bad review because I’m a business owner too. However I don’t want anyone else to receive inferior work with someone who won’t acknowledge the shortcomings.

Caitlin hired me to mow her lawn and mulch the grass. I showed up with mulch blades on my mower, but she failed let me know that her yard was a mountain and the yard was in the shape of a wild jungle with small woody trees growing in it. When I got there I let her know that my I could not mow her yard with mulch blades due to the steep incline and the shape it was in and advised her that to complete this job I would have to use a string trimmer for the whole job. She agreed and let me know that it was a job no one else would take and that she was not particular about the cut, and just wanted it cut. I did her whole front and back yard with a string trimmer (as clearly discussed with her prior to starting the job), then her and her husband refused to pay me because of clippings and leaves being on the sidewalk/street and not blown away. Then her husband sent me half of a payment and threatened me that if he had to pay the other half that he would leave me a bad review. He also threatened me and told me "YOU DON'T KNOW WHO YOUR MESSING WITH". I took pictures of the yard prior and after and did the best honest job I could with the shape that their yard was in and the equipment that I had on hand. I’m sorry that they were not satisfied with the best job I could do with the equipment I had on hand based on the work she described was needed on Thumbtack. If she had described the work accurately I would have brought a leaf blower, but I still do not think this would have satisfied her or her husband. I should have just turned the job down like everyone else she attempted to hire. Lesson learned. Afterward her husband tried to claim I broke a window and had me on camera and he would post a bad review. I let him know I looked forward to seeing that video and still have not received it from him. There was nothing damaged while I worked on the property and I let the customer know this. I did this entire 1/4 acre on a mountain with a string trimmer for $150 and it is a 1.5 hour trip for me there and back. Only $150 for 4.5 hours of my time for a job no one else would even take. I wish I could satisfy every customer but sometimes when they want an impossible job for an impossible price we just have to accept the bad review in exchange for payment so we can stay in business.
