Just in time for allergy season, Thumbtack introduced the company’s first-ever list of the Sneeziest Cities in America.
While spring brings longer days, warmer weather, and open windows, it also ushers in pollen, dust, and the return of the seasonal sniffles. We took a look at which cities are getting hit the hardest and shared tips on what homeowners can do to help reduce common home allergens before they take over. We analyzed demand for projects tied to indoor air quality, allergen buildup, and outdoor pollen control to identify where residents are taking action inside and outside their homes.

With Atlanta, Charlotte, and Austin topping the rankings, it is clear the South is feeling allergy season in a big way.
Seven of the top 10 sneeziest cities are located in the Southeast or Texas. Longer growing seasons, dense tree coverage, and high humidity create the perfect recipe for pollen to thrive and stick around. In many of these cities, allergy season is not a quick wave; it lingers.
Homeowners across the region are focusing on what they can control, investing in projects that improve air quality and reduce pollen buildup. And while the South dominates the list, Seattle’s appearance in the top 10 is a reminder that damp climates bring their own challenges. Allergy triggers may start outside, but for many people, the real battle happens at home.
5 ways to reduce allergens in your home
Your sinuses don’t have to suffer in silence. Here are five practical ways homeowners can cut down on allergens this season.
- Maintain your HVAC system
If your HVAC system is overdue for maintenance, you’re essentially recirculating last week’s pollen. Replace filters every 1–3 months during peak season and consider professional duct cleaning to prevent allergens from continuously cycling through your home.
2. Deep clean soft surfaces regularly
Carpets, rugs, and upholstered furniture trap pollen, dust mites, and pet dander more than hard surfaces. Vacuum high-traffic areas several times a week with a HEPA filter and complete regular carpet or upholstery cleanings to significantly reduce buildup.
3. Establish a pollen control routine at entry points
Most allergens enter the home on shoes and clothing. Removing shoes immediately and changing out of outdoor clothes can dramatically reduce the amount of pollen that settles on floors and furniture.
4. Stay on top of yard maintenance
Your yard is the first line of defense during allergy season. Mow lawns regularly to prevent grass from flowering, trim back trees and shrubs near windows (especially high-pollen producers like oak, cedar, and birch), and rinse patios, decks, and outdoor furniture weekly to reduce what gets tracked indoors.
5. Seal gaps around doors and windows
Prevention is more effective than constant cleaning. Seal cracks and add or replace weatherstripping around doors and windows, and keep windows closed on high pollen days to prevent allergens from drifting inside, even when the weather is nice.

Methodology
Data is based on requests for allergy-related home projects on the Thumbtack platform between March 1, 2025, and February 28, 2026. Projects analyzed include HVAC filter replacement, air duct cleaning, carpet cleaning, deep house cleaning, lawn mowing and trimming, tree trimming and removal, weathersealing, vent installation, and furniture reupholstery. Rankings were determined by the relative frequency of these project requests per capita. Prices referenced are based on national 2025 and 2026 project estimates from Thumbtack data.
