If owning a home in Seattle feels like an ongoing project, you’re not alone. New Thumbtack data shows that for many homeowners, caring for a home isn’t a one-time task — it’s a story still being written. It’s a continuous journey shaped by cost, weather, and the realities of living in one of the country’s most competitive (and expensive) housing markets.
More than half (58%) of Seattle homeowners say they think about home improvements at least weekly, including 21% who think about it every single day. Younger homeowners feel it even more acutely, with nearly a third (32%) of those aged 25–34 thinking about changes they’d make in their home daily.
When it comes to home improvements, cost is the biggest barrier, but it’s far from the only one. While 75% of Seattle homeowners say affordability is their top challenge when it comes to home improvements, many are also navigating a complicated and fragmented process.
It all adds up to a homeownership experience that takes time and thoughtful prioritization, as Seattle homeowners work to make steady, meaningful progress on their homes. And then there’s the weather. For many Seattle homeowners, their home story gets a new plot twist every rainy season. Climate doesn’t just influence what homeowners want, it helps shape how and when projects get done. A striking 84% of Seattle homeowners say they’ve delayed a project because of weather, and more than four in ten (43%) cite rain and moisture as one of the biggest challenges of owning a home here. It’s no surprise, then, that when Seattle homeowners imagine the next chapter for their home, many of their dream upgrades are designed with the Pacific Northwest’s weather in mind.
That same practicality shows up in how Seattle homeowners think about sustainability. While the region is known for its environmental values, most homeowners are focused on sustainable upgrades that deliver tangible benefits. The top motivator for sustainable home improvements is lowering monthly energy bills (71%), followed by reducing environmental impact (57%) and increasing home value (50%).

The “Seattle tax” on homeownership is real, with 69% saying maintaining a home here requires more work than other cities.
