About Carter Dye
Carter Dye is located in beautiful Coeur d’Alene Idaho. For the past 30 years he has been repairing and manufacturing superb fine jewelry for happy customers from around the world. Carter’s beginnings in the industry had him designing as a hobby at the early age of 14. His propensity for art and innate creativity led him to pursue his love as his career, and earned him 8 degrees from the Gemological Institute of America where he graduated at the top of his class. The ability to work with any metal, any stone, sketch any design, within just about any budget, is the tip of the iceberg for this talented craftsman.
While Carter is very proficient and experienced in the art of design and manufacturing, he finds that the most rewarding part of the business is the opportunity to interact with his clients. A people person by nature, he enjoys the process of creating that special piece as unique as the person who wears it. To be part of an heirloom that will be in a family for generations to come is a powerful relationship.
Because Carter is so versatile and able to work with any medium, he can also work within the scope of your budget. While many master jewelers are only willing to work with precious stones and metals, Carter can build your dream piece around your realistic budget.
As a member of Thumbtack, Carter looks forward to building an extensive testimonial archive to add to his existing list of happy clients.
“I love inspiring the feelings that people have when an heirloom is restored or a vow is embellished. My sense of accomplishment comes from the smile on a customer's face when they tell me that everyone told them it couldn't be done”!

I loved everything about this jeweler. I gave him a verbal description of what I wanted, and he came back with a picture of what he can do. I needed one more diamond to match the diamond that I had and he came up with an exact copy of it. He stayed in touch with me every step of the way, his price was amazing, the ring is absolutely beautiful. I am going to ask him to make one more ring for me I trust him completely and he is awesome.

I contacted Carter rather late in my search to get someone to make a pair of earrings for my wife. I already had a pretty good idea of the design I wanted. I was very surprised when he said he could have them finished in time for me to give them to her for Christmas. He made a few suggestions of ways to make them better. I liked most of them. The earrings are beautiful, well made, and exceeded my expectations. I really enjoyed working with Carter, and am pleased at how well and how quickly he was able to complete my design.

Carter transformed a single bulky heart pendant that had been my Mom's into 5 beautiful, dainty diamond accented heart charms for me and each of my sisters so we could all have a piece of this heirloom. While I was initially hesitant to entrust this sentimental piece to someone in another state that I had just met on Thumbtack, Carter made me feel comfortable with the process- asking lots of questions, sending suggested artwork and working with me to get just the right products created while staying in my price range. He completed everything and sent back in plenty of time for Christmas and even sent a video of the transformation process that I could share with my sisters. I would highly recommend Carter and Co. Jewelers for any custom jewelry work- I could not be happier with the outcome!

This was my first experience having a piece of jewelry made and Carter was patient and very professional. The final product was exactly what I wanted. He also customized a store bought chain for the pendant and repaired another one I purchased in Israel. Carter will be my go to for any custom jewelry I have made in the future.

FAQs
What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
Consider a few things when looking for a jewelry repair estimate. First, understand that no Jeweler can evaluate your jewelry’s sentimental value and quite often a repair charge will exceed the monetary value of the jewelry. This can sometimes be an uncomfortable conversation between the jeweler and the customer because the jeweler doesn’t know or understand your jewelry’s sentimental value. Also more often than not, the customer thinks that their jewelry is worth much more than it truly is because of inflated insurance replacement values posted on appraisals. Every piece of jewelry has approximately six different values to it. They can be categorized accordingly.
1) “I need quick cash” value. Generally 10% of retail value. (meaning, if you paid $200, you might get $20)
2) pawnshop value. Generally 20% of wholesale value.
3) wholesale value. Generally 30% of retail value
4) retail value. (it is what it is:)
5) Insurance replacement value. Generally 50%-70% over retail value. This cost considers sourcing or remaking and replacing the jewelry at current market rate.
6) sentimental value...
That being said, a qualified, well trained and experienced Jeweler is typically expecting $20-$40 an hour. Shipping jewelry both ways can cost approximately $25. Thumbtack pros are charged between $8 to $12 to quote you on a repair. Generally they will quote for a minimum of one hour, much like a mechanic would. So here is the math.
Labor average $35
Shipping average $25
Quote Absorbing $10
Total minimum =$65
This being said, if you’re jewelry is worth less than approximately $65 you should consider replacing it with something that will have more opportunity to provide extended appreciation. ( I can help you with that too...Carter Dye is my name:-)
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
Some people are well enough accustomed to e-commerce transitions and they get right to the production phase in just a few communications. Others need elaborate details, designs and communications. I love it all! Get to work and stick to business or build an understanding of who, what, where and how to best accommodate the personality, purpose, lifestyle and occasion. Customers can call, email and even Facetime me for a more one on one encounter.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
Graduate Jeweler/Gemologist (GJG) from the Gemological Institute of America (GIA)
