Louis used to work for me, and he was the best carpenter I've ever had. He has come back to do projects for me working for himself, and they all have come out excellent.
A lot of carpenters think they are great at what they do, and in my experience, 95% or more don't know what they don't know, and end up installing something before checking certain details. Because many homeowners don't notice very small details, these carpenters believe they did the job right.
Louis has exceptional attention to detail and understands what he doesn't know before installing something. He's so careful and thorough, that he was more reliable as an entry level carpenter than a lot of the site leads. I never had to babysit him, and at some point, I really relied on him to run a lot of my projects. Now he's a much higher-level carpenter, in addition to possessing all of those innate characteristics to do truly great work. It makes sense that he is running his own outfit now, because he is one of the special ones. He stays up at night thinking about the trim he will install the next day.
That kind of obsession and skill will make someone very lucky to hire him, just please help the guy not undercharge for his skills!
