Absolute BEST is not nearly enough that can be said about Gray Timber Construction. We put an above ground pool in and my own DIY job got it off level just too much to feel safe about. Jim and Gray Timber came out and got my location leveled out perfectly. So professional, so accurate, so much attention to detail. I would not hesitate to hire Gray Timber again and again and recommend everyone do the same with their home or business construction projects.

Working with Jim has been a nightmare for our family. We signed a contract with him to remodel our house in June 2022. PER THE CONTRACT we all signed, he was supposed to remodel our house and it was supposed to be completed by December 31, 2022. It is now June 2023 and we are still not able to move into our house. He depleted our entire building budget and has left us with an unfinished house. We even took on some of the work ourselves (interior painting, flooring install, cabinet install) in order to save money and come in on budget. Then when he saw we had extra funds to keep us in budget, he would raise his prices on his "labor" on other line items. In our contract Jim signed, he outlined all the costs of each project line item on our house that he was going to complete. Several months into our project he began to extort us for more money saying he would quit and put a lien on our property if we did not pay him what he demanded even though his charges were 70-80% above what he agreed to in our contract. His only explanation was that "prices are going up" even though when we signed our contract with him prices were at the highest and continued to drop over the course of the project.Interestigly, all of our subcontractors were able to stick to their quotes that were given at the same time as Jim's original contract. Why couldnt Jim?Jim's MO was to begin work on a line item, and then send an invoice for additional charges, saying that the labor and/or materials were significantly higher than his quote. He would then threaten to stop work if we did not agree to the new pricing. A normal contractor would submit a change order request for extra charges BEFORE beginning the work. Jim never did, and if he did submit one at all it wasnt until AFTER he completed the project.Eventually, when we became fed up with his extortion tactics we fired him. He demanded we pay his exorbitant prices (he held our materials, WHICH WE HAD ALREADY PAID FOR, hostage!) or he threatened to put a lien on our property. We repeatedly asked Jim to stay within our budget as it was agreed upon in our contract. However, he would never give us a clear answer as to what he would charge on the next project before he started, or in several instances he outright deceived us. (I.e. "if we don't go crazy we should stay within budget". He then proceeded to send us an invoice for an additional $8K on an original $12K line item.)He even tried pressuring us to take out an additional $83K loan from our bank so he could continue to overcharge us for his labor once he saw our budget getting thin.We dont want any family to have to go through what we went through being extorted by this man or this company. Its a very helpless feeling to be extorted by someone when we so badly needed a house to move into for our family.Thankfully our bank finally saw what he was doing to us and blacklisted him. They have stated they will never work with him or his company again. There really are only two possibilities for the way he conducts business: either he is an incompetent contractor and doesn't know how to bid, or he is a thief and an extortionist. Buyer beware!

What mathew didn’t express in this review of lies, is that all the work completed by my company was completed, site inspected and approved by HIS BANK before any payment was ever delivered to me. Matt asked me to help them out because he and his wife couldn’t get anyone to take on this dreadful hunting cabin remodel, on the worst road in Boundary county. I felt sorry for them originally, so I decided to take on this nightmare project. After signing the banks contract that had line item costs for the supplies to complete the project, the product pricing doubled and tripled in a very short time period and matt expected my company to eat the costs, which didn’t happen and why he’s so bent on soiling my name. His naivety of all things construction related are what cost him more money than he had to spend, he tries to blame us for the bank trying to force him into getting additional monies to cover all the costs which is absurd! As if i had the power to do so! If you don’t believe me, talk to the local well driller in Bonner’s Ferry, matt budgeted $29,000 for his well and it cost him $60,000! He moved here from Texas, bought more land than he could afford and then decided to fix up an existing decrepit hunting cabin in the woods for his family to live in without the resources or knowledge to do so. All the work done on his decrepit hunting cabin was INSPECTED AND APPROVED by HIS BANK. Example, he had a $6000 dollar budget for windows, he spent $8000 on windows, which in turn, was more windows to install - hence the higher cost of installation for man hours. I could bore you with way more instances where this was the case but the point is this, he’s the one that will have to explain to our God the lies he has spouted in this review and about my company. Don’t believe a word of it! The work we do is some of the finest in all of Northern Idaho! May God bless matt and his family - that’s all I was trying to do.
