I currently work with Scott, Tarra, and Mike with my Malinois in protection work. They have given me the confidence and skills to train and start competing in a sport I am not confident or familiar with. They do a great job training obedience as well. I don’t trust many people with my dog but these guys are the real deal!

I have a fully trained, dual purpose service dog / personal protection dog that I was looking to do continued protection training / education as well as improve my overall relationship and handling skills. I had inquired with other trainers in Chicago and was disappointed to discover that many didn’t want to work with us because of my dog, Langston’s, breed. He’s a Bullherder and that’s not very common in the states and it’s not common as a service/protection dog. When I found Scott at Akela, I knew this would be different. Having really developed his skills and expertise in the UK, Scott was familiar with Bullherders and how to access all sides of their breeding, personality, and drive. Not only that, he is experienced with many styles and many tools of dog training. I have appreciated the way Scott runs sessions — very well planned and yet able to pivot based on how we show up. He explains in depth concepts and expectations; for someone high anxiety like me, having a clear understanding of what I’m doing and why is essential. My Langston injured himself at home at the beginning of the year and Scott was super supportive with suggestions on how to navigate a long rest period while Keeping up engagement and even learning new skills. That was a game changer for us. I absolutely recommend Akela K9 Training as a place to brush up your skills, start from scratch with a new dog, have fun interacting with other dog folks, get into dog sports, or dip your toe into the protection training world. They meet you wherever you’re at and help take you to the next level. These are experts here. And they love dogs.
