Introduction: I'm fun and engaging with young kids. I help keep them motivated with creative yet realistic examples of when they will use certain subjects in the real world. I teach phonics, reading, math, anything they may be struggling with academically. I can help them learn it! I also teach chess. Chess is something everyone should learn. It teaches kids how to think things through as well as pattern recognition and other necessary life skills. Request more info on why you and your child should learn to play chess.

Thank you for helping my children learn chess. I was amazed at your ability to connect and break down complex rules with little ones. Great job!

Miss Kathy draws from a wealth of experience and resources to teach children and beginners of all ages the fundamentals of chess. Her curriculum will take a player from the movement of pieces all the way to playing and notating tournament style games from opening to endgame. Her teaching style is clear, good paced, and easy to understand.

FAQs

  • What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

My rates are reasonable. I offer no discounts. My services are high quality.

  • What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

I ask them what they are looking to improve. I then assess their skills with a few related quizzes or a game of chess if that's what I'm assessing. I then prepare an individualized lesson plan to meet their specific needs.

  • What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

I have an associates degree that's focused on special education and child psychology. I've worked as a teacher, daycare teacher, Special Education Aide, and tutor on and off for the last 20 years. A wise chess player once said, "You must lose one thousand games before you can get better." My training in chess is as follows. I learned the basics from a babysitter when I was young. Then I re-discovered it while going to a chess club with a boyfriend about 15 years ago and I've been learning about it ever since then. About 2015 I was asked to teach in an after school program at a christian school. I have worked with kids from first grade through junior high here. Then I was referred to two other christian schools in their zones. I've worked a lot with beginners encouraging them to try again when they want to give up.
