Higher Ground Tutoring Services

Introduction: Higher Ground Tutoring Services of Bloomington-Normal is a locally owned and operated private tutoring company dedicated to providing caring, individualized assistance to students of all ages and ability levels throughout the Bloomington-Normal community. Our goal is to make academic and ESL tutoring services available to all students at an affordable price. At Higher Ground Tutoring Services, we value diversity and work hard to design programs that value and respect each student's differences and that build upon each student's strengths and prior knowledge. For our ESL students, we believe in an approach that encourages students to maintain their native language and culture, while also developing their English language skills. Lessons can be provided in a safe, quiet environment where students will receive individual attention and can learn in a stress-free atmosphere without distractions. Or, we can conduct sessions by telephone or online using interactive web conferencing. We focus on working with our students to build confidence, increase motivation, and to develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills. We do not use memorization and drill, but instead equip students with the tools that they will need to eventually achieve academic success on their own. About the Instructor Robin Landry, MAEd, TESOL has been a Bloomington-Normal resident since 2005. Robin has a bachelor's degree in management information systems from Ball State University and a master's degree in Education with a concentration in teaching English as a second language from Ashford University. Robin has had experience as an underwriting trainer at State Farm insurance companies; has volunteered as a writing tutoring with the In2Books online tutoring program; and was a facilitator for the McLean County Speaking Up for Success public speaking program in 2010. Robin worked as a volunteer math and reading tutor for the Capitol Area STAR Literacy program in Lansing, Michigan from 2000 through 2004, and is currently a volunteer ESL tutor with the McLean County STAR Literacy program in Bloomington-Normal.
