- What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
We require our staff to continue taking dog behavior classes and there are various video and workbooks that they must go through and pass in order to stay working with us. As an owner, I am always taking dog behavior classes because I find it fascinating!
- How did you get started doing this type of work?
I volunteered at a local animal shelter for 6 years. While there, I cleaned kennels, walked dogs, helped with play groups, fed the dogs, took phone calls from people wanting to give up their dogs, helped people find the right dog to adopt, helped with bookkeeping and office work and was on the board of directors. In doing all of that, I heard so many times that the reason people were giving up their adolescent dogs was because, "it's more work than they thought it would be". I felt if I could help with some of the work, they wouldn't have to give up their dogs. There were some dogs that we could not take at the shelter because the dog had a record of biting. In doing some research, I found the #1 reason for dogs biting is a lack of socialization. I felt if I could open a business that would help with some of the work and also help socialize the dogs, perhaps there wouldn't be so many bites in our community, nor would there be as many dogs being put to sleep or given up.
