I have used Alvin Smithson's services for over five years as a piano tuner, teacher and performer. I am always impressed with his skills, artistry and professionalism. Alvin first came to tune my 100-years old Steinway after it had been neglected for a number of years. He first examined the instrument, diagnosed what needed to be done and then proceeded with his expert tuning. Immediately after he was done and started playing, I was amazed at how good the piano sounded. Alvin explained that with a piano that hasn't been tuned or played in so many years, it will take some time to achieve its best form and sound for which it was built. A short time after, my wife started taking piano lessons from Alvin and as she started gaining proficiency in playing under his guidance, the piano itself gained a rich pleasing sound. Alvin paid close attention and adjusted notes or did a full tuning whenever needed. He also took the time to clean the strings and do minor technical adjustments. When a string needed to be replaced, Alvin recommended a technician from a highly reputable company. Overall, we owe it to his expertise to have the wonderful old piano do what it was built for by the Steinway masters. I should also mention that I heard some great musicians at venues where Alvin is the regular piano tuner. People who visit our house and hear our piano, or play it themselves, always compliment its sound. But the best comes when Alvin himself sits at the keyboard, whether at our house, at a social function or performing in the theater, it's such a joy to hear him play some great classical pieces as well as his own wonderful compositions. He is truly a very talented, sensitive and highly knowledgeable artist. And such a pleasant person, too. My wife and I feel fortunate to have Alvin give us the best piano sound to enjoy live music in our home. I would recommend him to anyone as piano tuner, teacher and overall musician.

I was an adult beginning piano student of Penny's in New Haven for a couple years until I moved, even though her other students were young. At first I was embarrassed because I'd wait a few minutes for my lesson and hear like a 12 year old or so, playing a big Beethoven Sonata or something, and then I'd be in there as an adult playing maybe a few of those level 1 or 2 pieces. But I can't imagine how anyone could stay embarrassed around Penny A.. She's sweet and seems to have a way of helping people feel good about themselves. But she's not the type you'd want to catch you slacking off because she cares so much and is generous so you'd feel very bad about slacking off. She also didn't treat me as a little old lady with limited music abilities. I think she cared as much about me and my progress as she did about that young prodigy I mentioned, for example. I looked forward to my lesson. And the kids before and after my lesson were relaxed and jokey and they seemed to like her as much as I did. But of course I can't speak for them! This thing says I'm supposed to say something went wrong. Probably nothing that wasn't my own fault. Only thing I can think of, maybe she'd always give me and other students a little extra time, so if your lesson is maybe during the second half of her day, you might have to wait 10 minutes, never over 15 minutes, for your lesson. I didn't mind though. Penny A taught very well.. I'm really happy to read music and play so much on my piano that before had been collecting dust. It impresses my family, too!

I highly recommend Simon for your wedding, funeral, or other need. I was blessed and honored to have Simon provide the music for a funeral service earlier this year. With Simon's talent as a vocalist, as well as his skills as a composer, pianist, organist, and accompanist, the music was superb. He worked with me closely on the planning, and his suggestions for the service were excellent, including the addition of a soloist with whom Simon had worked. Many people told me afterwards how much the music touched them and uplifted them on a sad occasion, and I was touched and uplifted as well.

We hired Kim's trio for our jazz soiree and they were excellent! Kim let us know a few days prior to the event that he couldn't make it, and gave us the option of canceling or having the trio w/ another pianist playing in his stead. We could have gotten another band altogether (three replied to our request on Thumbtack), but we went w/ his option of the substitute pianist and could not have been happier. The trio was fabulous, attendees from the young to the not so young loved all the tunes, and everyone had the best time. We are definitely putting Kim and his trio or quartet on our slate of events for 2018.

I am the head of the vocal dept. at Hillsdale College in MI. Sadie was an accompanist in my studio for four years. She was always prepared for my singers and spent time outside of lessons to help them and rehearse with them. She is extremely musical and is an excellent sight reader. She has a very affable personality and is very fun to be around. I would recommend her for any accompanying job as well as teaching of younger students. She is relialbe and well versed in much vocal music as well as piano literature. Sometimes she takes on too much and that is the only thing that I would have her work on to better her performance. That was in a college setting which can be very stressful when combined with other studies. In the professional world I don't think that would be a problem. She is a very well rounded musician and would be able to excel in many venues. I recommend her most highly.

Ron is well versed in music theory, rhythms, chords, scales, and basically all musical concepts for beginners, mid-level, or even professional level piano players. He relates in a "down to earth" manner, that is easy to understand and apply ! Keep up the good work Ron !! I even received personal calls, to help me improve my playing. I was an absolute beginner, when Ron started helping me, and I didn't know what a chord or scale was, and now, for the last 4 years, I have been the "House" pianist, at a luxury hotel, playing for weddings, corporate events, etc.!! (I would play for FREE, but the hotel is paying me to play...I can't believe it !! I am learning everyday, and I thank Ron, for giving me the foundation tools, needed to learn, to play the piano.

Justin performed for my wedding ceremony. He worked with us ahead of time to choose his setlist, and he learned specific songs that we requested for special parts of the ceremony. His performance was musically beautiful. He was on time, well dressed, and he is a friendly person that we enjoyed working with.

Ms. Craig is my grandson's piano teacher. She is fantastic. With the patience of a saint, and her ability to communicate with a child with no prior experience in music, I could not ask for a more qualified instructor. I highly recommend Ms. Craig to anyone interested in music/piano lessons. She is absolutely delightful.

We have been working with Sam for almost a year now. My two children (ages 6 and 8) delight in working with Sam. They look forward to piano lessons and never complain about having to go. Having started the violin at a young age and continuing to play into my adult years, I am very particular about how my children are trained musically and had very specific ideas about how I wanted them to learn music. I knew that I wanted a teacher who focused on the whole child and not just the technique of playing. From the first time we met with Sam, I knew that he was exactly the teacher that I was looking for. Sam trains the kids to be musicians, not just pianists. He focus on training the ear and composition as well as piano technique. And somehow he manages to do all of this in an extremely approachable and engaging way, even for the very youngest of players. His approach is unique in that it does not only work with notes, but also distinguishing major and minor, ear training, and composition. In fact, he routinely composes small pieces with the kids that they then continue to practice and add to. Sam is also a very engaged teacher. He is completely focused on the child and the lesson and he is acutely aware of the kid's interest level. If there is a weakness or he senses that the child is losing focus, he is able to very adeptly adapt the lesson to bring the child back into the fold. For instance, if he senses that my son is starting to drift, he quickly switches gears and plays an ear-training game or rhythm exercise to get the child interacting again. And, although my kids are very young and still learning the very basics of piano playing, Sam is great at incorporating musicality to the lesson. My daughter is 8 and although she is just starting out -- she has been playing for about a month or so -- he has had her really listen to the pieces she is working on and make decisions about phrasing and tone. I am of the belief that music is very much a joint venture between the teacher and the parents. What is taught at lessons should be reinforced at home. Sam is great at communicating to me how my kids should be practicing and what areas need particular focus. He is also great at tailoring the curriculum to the child and maintains flexibility so that the curriculum is always dynamic. On a personal note, I am thrilled to have a young, male role model for my boys who is a successful musician but also pursues a variety of other interests as well. Sam is very easy to schedule with and he is very responsive. We are really happy with how the kids are progressing with Sam and I really feel that they are getting the best musical education. He is a real treasure and we consider ourselves lucky to have gotten in with him!

“Ms.Sarah” has been my son’s piano teacher for about four years and since he was in 2nd grade. My son had adored his previous (male) piano teacher and we were very concerned when he had to move away. However, after his first lesson with Ms. Sarah, he never looked back again and has always enjoyed lessons, even if on some days he may not have been “in the mood” at first. Ms. Sarah successfully stirred him through the inevitable “I-hate-piano” phase with lots of understanding and gentle coaching, always finding new music that could inspire him. He evolved into a passionate player who loves to perform at every occasion, be it casually in class at school, school talent shows, or just for visitors at home. The best recommendation can really only come from our son himself and this is what he has to say: “Ms. Sarah is very nice. She never gets upset when I make mistakes and instead helps me to improve. She makes playing the piano a lot of fun! I have great respect for her also because she respects me, too. “

Christine Padua performed vocally and arranged music in multiple languages, styles and genres for my wedding ceremony and reception. She worked with a violinist, organist, and pianist. She modified a duet into a solo performance; shorten the length of music to match my ceremony, and arranged music for both piano and organ. She was fluid in her ability to go from contemporary, to classical, to opera. She sang fluently in Italian, French, and English, yet also knows multiple other languages. Padua arranged the song "La Vien Rose" in both French and English, which she performed as well. She is able to lead other musicians and instrumentalist because of her extensive understanding and knowledge of music theory, sight-reading, and education /experience of training operatically and playing piano. She truly is gifted in music in multiple facets and anyone who gets to learn or work with her is truly in for a treat. She is professional, friendly, and easy to work with. To this day, guests comment on how special the wedding was because of her beautiful performance. Padua has a moving spiritual voice that makes walking down the aisle feel dream like. My guests were moved to tears and awe stricken. Hire her before she becomes famous because it really is a once in a lifetime chance to work with such an amazingly talented artist before they"make it big."
