Maurice, It was such a show I thought I was in Branson or Vegas. Everyone loved it and it brought me back home to Kansas City Blues. Showmanship, energy, voice and again a step back home to Kansas City. I will call back for another of Maurice's shows in the fall and also a Christmas program Jill Powell, Special Programming for Addington Place

I've been studying with Terah for a little over a year now. Her enthusiasm for the Simply Music program is equalled only by her encouraging attitude toward my playing. It's even possible that someday soon her relaxed demeanor will have its effect on me and I'll stop being nervous about playing for an audience. She plays so well, herself, and loves music so much that she's an ongoing inspiration. I've learned a great deal in every level I've passed through and find myself playing music (the blues, specifically) that I never dreamed I would. I really have no criticism of her. If my childhood teachers had been like her, I'd have been something of a wonder by now! :)

Ego Satellites have played a few gigs at events that I've organized. Their professionalism is amazing, the set list options fit almost any crowd, and the crowd interaction is top notch! If you're looking for a complete band to perform the best hits from the last 30 years, I highly recommend this group.

Awesome DJ! Great music! Very professional services. The DJ took requests, but honestly played everything we wanted to hear without being asked! Non stop good times. The only thing that would make it more exciting is if there were a live band to split the time and mix it up! Bryce - Satisfied Customer

Lost Wax performed at my wedding and they were unbelievable! I cannot tell you how many people called/emailed/texted me after the wedding to find out who that band was b/c they were SO impressed. I literally do not think that I left the dance floor all night. The members of the band were incredible and they created the most fun atmosphere for the entire crowd. It was the most amazing night! If anyone is looking for a band that will get people dancing and having the time of their lives then you have to get in touch with Chris! People say that the band will set the mood of the whole night and if that’s the case then the amazingly fun ‘mood’ was set and exceeded by Lost Wax and their incredible energy. Best decision ever!

My daughter decided she wanted to play saxophone at the age of 15. She began learning from John around the start of the spring semester of her freshman year. By that fall, she was good enough to make the high school marching band! We've continued taking lessons from John, and she has continued to progress throughout the year. She is now capable of playing alongside other saxophonists who have been playing since Junior High. John's a professional, and his love of saxophone rubs off on my daughter. I still can't believe she's gotten to the level she's at after such a short time.

I am fifty-one and wanted to take a few guitar lessons. I was turn on to Jacob back in February of 2012 and go for thirty minute lessons once a week. I suppose there are hundreds of good teachers in the ares, but I think in Jacob I have found a good mix of what I need to know and what I want to know. In the short time that Jacob has been teaching me, I can now read music, know a little about theory, know enough chords to play hundreds of song! We spend a lot of time playing scales up and down the neck, this is called soloing. Its what you hear in most rock and blues with all the bends, hammer on, hammer off and slides. I take my lessons sometime with my acoustic and then my electric. I will never be able to play classical like Andres Segovia or shred like Slash, but with Jacobs help someday soon I will be able to play a ton of stuff. Each week he gives me more and more tools to help me to fulfill a dream I have had for as long as I can remember. Give Jacob a try and see if he's a good fit with what you want to accomplish. You may want to pay him just to play for you!

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

      What is a mariachi band?

Mariachi bands are rooted in Mexican culture. Traditional mariachi bands consisted of two or more members playing stringed instruments, wearing regional costumes adapted from the charro (Mexican horseman or cowboy). Modern mariachi bands, which are likely what you’re looking for when searching for a mariachi band for hire, feature at least four members who play stringed instruments (violin, vihuela, bass guitar called guitarron) and one or more trumpets. The costumes have remained the same, but now trumpets are synonymous with mariachi music. Mariachi bands for hire often play a wide range of music, including styles originating from Mexico and adopted from elsewhere. These include jarabes, waltzes, serenades, corridos (Mexican ballads), ranchera, cumbia, and more. Mariachi bands for hire bring a festive and soulful element to a party, birthday, wedding, corporate affair, fundraiser or community event. UNESCO has inscribed mariachi music on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

How many mariachis can a band have?

A mariachi band for hire can have as many players as you like. Modern mariachi bands typically have a minimum of four players with the trumpet playing a vital musical role along with stringed instruments such as the violin, guitarrón (a Mexican bass guitar with a deep body), vihuela (a Spanish stringed guitar) and guitar. Strong vocals are also an important component of mariachi bands for hire, since one or more of the players will be singing during the performance. For a truly spectacular show, you can hire a mariachi band with 15 or more players. The medley of stringed instruments, multiple trumpets, soaring vocals, and even an accordion or harp is powerful and beautiful. Mariachis typically wear the traditional costume of charros — Mexican horsemen. The look is a very regal, monotone suit, often in black or white, with silver adornments and embroidery. Mariachi bands often wear sombreros as well. Traditional mariachi bands were only made up of two or more players, according to a UNESCO report celebrating the cultural heritage of the musical style. The style of music originated in the state of Jalisco. Now the style of music is symbolic of Mexico but is celebrated all over the world, and adds a fabulous vibrancy to any group’s events, parties and weddings.

How much does a mariachi band cost?

A mariachi band will bring your party or event alive with their fabulous costumes, beautiful playing and strong vocals. The cost of a mariachi band for hire will depend on how many players are in the group. Each musician in a performance group needs to be paid, so pricing is usually based on the number of mariachis (musicians), the location of the event (and travel time required), and the length of the performance. Day of the week also affects cost, as does day — Christmas, New Year’s Eve and other major holidays will cost more than regular days. The national average cost for live bands of all types ranges between $740 and $1,200. Depending on where you live and regional rates for performers, you might expect to pay between $65 and $120 per hour, per player. Mariachi groups may have 12-15 players available for performance at one time, depending on your budget. Here are some examples of how the number of players affects average cost:

      • Four mariachis: $300 per hour for weeknights, $400 per hour for weekends.
      • Five mariachis: $350 per hour for weeknights, $400-$450 per hour for weekends. Weekends may have a minimum number of hours.
      • Six mariachis: $400 per hour for weeknights, $450-$500 per hour for weekends.
