Hired on Thumbtack
I hired him to move 3 pieces of furniture (a couch, a credenza, and an armoire) between my old and new house - a 5 minute drive. We discussed this on the phone and via text in detail ahead of time. This is what happened:
- After originally cancelling on me afternoon of planned move (a Friday), he arrived on time this Monday afternoon. This left me without my furniture through the weekend and slightly desperate for the move.
- When I arrived and saw that his moving vehicle was an open unwalled plywood trailer with three leaking trash bags inside it, I expressed discomfort. This did not seem a safe way to transport furniture. He assured me, "I do this all the time".
- The "employees" he referred to in text (his reason for his high rate) turned out to be one person - his wife (who was very pleasant and not to blame for any of this).
- He and his wife started with my armoire (antique and irreplaceable by someone without massive funds). It was clear that it was too heavy for them. They put it down repeatedly, scraping it on cement. It was shaking and looked like it was going to fall apart every time they dropped it.
- They loaded the armoire upright onto the floor of the trailer. No straps. Not snug. This did not look like a safe way to transport it. I again expressed discomfort. He assured me he had straps and other appropriate moving material and "it won't budge...you have to trust me".
- They then transported the couch and credenza outside. This was again clearly a struggle for them.
- Once they got everything out they asked ME for a blanket to "put on top" implying this was to protect the furniture. As I am moving, I did not have many blankets. I gave them the only one I had - a nice gift I'd been given. I believed this would go on top of my furniture. HOWEVER, they put it on the plywood floor on top of the trash juice and put the furniture on top of it.
- They did not load my couch cushions with the couch. This was a bizarre decision as the cushions would have done a lot to help pack the furniture together to stop the furniture from falling over. He later accused me of his reason for this: "you had the cushions". (I had helped remove the cushions when they prepared to transport the couch down the stairs).
- Remember that he told me he had straps to keep everything snug and safe? That was a lie (one of many). With my three pieces of furniture standing unsecured standing loose and apart he tried to get into his truck to drive away. "What about the straps?" I asked. He quickly said "oh well remember this is my brothers truck". He didn't actually have straps or any other moving material.
- His solution to the no straps/loose unsecured furniture was to have his wife squat in the trailer with the furniture to physically try to keep the armoire upright and the credenza from falling over. This of course did not work. The furniture swayed with doors swinging open and shut. He took a ridiculous long route between houses. The credenza doors were swingingly wildly until it fell onto the floor onto its open doors. It is now broken. I yelled for him to stop several times until he finally did. When I admittedly raised my voice in response to seeing my furniture fall over onto its open doors after he told me repeatedly (and angrily) to "trust him" I became upset. He then threatened to unload my furniture on the side of the road.
- He unloaded the furniture randomly into the house blocking my ability to access it or my house. He threatened to break my armoire if moved into the correct room.
- The credenza is broken. The couch has trash juice on it. The armoire is chipped and scratched.
- I had to go back for the couch cushions myself.
-I paid $300 for this.
Details: 3-5 items • Sofa • Other furniture items • Less than 5 miles • No change in floors to load items • Stairs to unload items
