Introduction: In 2007, multi-instrumentalist Dan Fox founded the Morningside Music Studio in Arlington's Morningside neighborhood. His vision was to have a laid back and supportive environment he and his wife, Jennifer Elowsky-Fox could teach private lessons and jazz ensembles. It has proved a good idea as groups and lesson times have started to fill with musicians of all levels eager to play and improve. Morningside offers weekly ongoing jazz ensembles. You can join one anytime and continue as long as you like. Work on improvisation techniques as well as building a repertoire of tunes. Topics include playing modal jazz, blues, standards, scales for improvisation, how to build a solo, phrasing, pacing, dynamics, and a lot more. Instruments accepted are piano, bass, guitar, drums, vocalists, and horn players. Players should either have some knowledge of harmony or be somewhat new to jazz but have some proficiency on their instruments. The idea will be to group people together who are at similar levels. Steinway grand piano, amps, and drums are available. Each group will be limited to four players. Morningside groups play concerts every few months. Previous venues include The Lily Pad, Ryles Jazz Club, The Chit Chat Lounge, Somerville Cable Access TV, and various coffeehouses. Fee is $25/class. No obligation to continue after first class if you choose not to. All groups are taught by Dan Fox. Schedule: Please contact us for the current schedule of evening and weekend daytime groups. Combos at all levels from beginning to advance are currently being offered. "The Morningside Music student ensemble is the ideal introduction into (or exploration of) the jazz world for the beginner/intermediate level player. In the short time since I've started, not only have I built substantially on my repertoire, but learned useful concepts for soloing and accompaniment. Under competent direction (and with a little hard work) you'll be amazed how you grow as a musician in leaps and bounds- two thumbs up!" Ethan Kaczowka - guitarist, 23 yrs. old
