Hired on Thumbtack

Daniel, the carpet technician, has a great personality and is a pleasure to work with. Work was done quickly and carpet looks good. 4/5 stars for price, little expensive for the full service.

Details: Apartment / condo • 1 room • Drink stains • No stairs • Steam cleaning • I have pets at home • No smokers in home

Hired on Thumbtack

I hired them for carpet cleaning and changing locks. From my understanding, they are 3 brothers one of whom (James) does the locksmith part and the other 2 carpet cleaning. James was polite, professional and responsive, and was going to send someone at the same time as the carpet cleaning. Well, only one person showed. I was working on fixing the front door lock at the time and he claimed he was a locksmith too and could help me. He wasn’t able to, but that was because the problem was with the electric lock. For carpet cleaning, I’d been quoted $129 for 2 bedrooms and stairs. They were aware I had some stains and were going to work with me to get them out. Upon arrival, the technician claimed steam cleaning is only for refreshing the carpet and not really removing stains. We discussed for a while and I was quoted $150 just for the living room since it’s not really a bedroom (point to note: the living room is not that much bigger than 1 bedroom in the condo/town house they were called to and also, there is no option on thumbtack to specifically enter living room when making a booking. It just asks how big the area to be cleaned is.). Anyway, we decided to go with $150 for the living room. While cleaning the living room, he asks how long I’m going to be at the house since he has another job and was wondering if he could get that done first. I said no, because I’m literally waiting for him to get done so I can leave. All of a sudden, he packed everything, says he lives only 10 mins away and will go get the locks. He said he’d be back in 30 mins. During this time, I check the carpet and see that the stains are still there. I figure he’s going to work on it once he’s back. 30 mins turn to 1.5 hours and multiple reach out attempts to them and arguing wondering if he’s actually coming back or went to do another job. In that case I wasn’t going to wait. Master key tells me I should’ve waited for the locksmith to arrive and not sent the carpet cleaner to get the lock since he’s not a locksmith. Well, I didn’t? He claimed he was a locksmith? And their name literally is Master Key? Also, the time for the locksmith to arrive was 9.30am and the time the carpet cleaner left to get the locks was 11am. Nobody else showed up this entire time. He finally arrives 1.5 hours later and claims the carpet is done already. I talk to master key, talk to the technician about the pricing and the stains on the carpet. They were more inclined to argue than conflict resolution and customer satisfaction. to add the cherry on top, right before leaving, they decided to charge me ‘6.25% sales tax on parts’ for the entire amount of carpet cleaning and lock replacing even though most of it was only service. I have never heard of this or been charged by anyone from thumbtack like this. I was beyond flustered by this time and tired of arguing so I made the payment just to get it over with. Due to the stress and the whole ordeal I had to go through, though I’m grateful the locks were replaced promptly (or I’d have been locked out of the house), I would not hire them for carpet cleaning. I would hire them for locksmith services though.
