I took Derrick's group Beginner Guitar class at BCAE and have signed up for the second level group class. Derrick's teaching style is relaxed an unintimidating which is ideal for a newcomer. He is extremely knowledgeable and is able to cover a wide range of material during each 1.5 hr lesson.May 7, 2014
I took the Beginner Ukulele course from Derrick at the BCAE. He was upfront on the first night telling us he was really a guitar teacher but the center had asked him to do this class. I would've never guessed he wasn't a ukulele teacher. In 4 short sessions, I was able to play actual songs and strum chords. He has a methodical way of teaching that makes it easy for a group lesson to feel like a private lesson. I liked his course so much I will be taking the guitar course that is coming up.Dec 15, 2011Review from Google

- What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)? My price might be cheaper than others because I'm teaching out of my house, and don't have to pay rent for studio space.
- What is your typical process for working with a new customer? The first two or three lessons I give the student songs and exercises I think are appropriate, but I'm also evaluating how they do with those to decide what they need to be working on. After a few weeks of lessons, I have a better idea of what a student specifically needs to work on.
- What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?I have studied with a variety of guitar teachers, some who were classically trained, and others with a jazz background. When I was in college, I taught guitar lessons at a music store, and had a sort of apprenticeship as a teacher for 4 years. During that time the owner of the store and the head teacher coached me on what to do and what not to do with students of varying skill levels and backgrounds. I feel like I learned a lot of very practical skills during that time for teaching beginners that I would not have learned from a Bachelor of Music degree program.
