Introduction: Having lived in New York on and off for years, I'm intimately familiar with the demands of being a jazz saxophonist in one of the most competitive scenes (if not the most competitive scene) in the world. But in addition to my experience as a performer, I bring a set of analytical skills cultivated during my time at the New England Conservatory and at Harvard College, which I bring to bear on the process of playing the saxophone and learning to improvise. I came to Kevin because I was looking to take lessons with someone who could not only teach and play well, but also someone with whom I could relate as a student and a younger player in the jazz world. Kevin has surpassed all of my criteria for a great teacher and I've found that his suggestions help me to approach my playing in totally new ways, looking at both the theoretical and anatomical aspects of saxophone playing. When I first decided to take lessons with Kevin, I just wanted a different type of experience from the lessons I was taking with a professor at New England Conservatory. In the end, I found that Kevin was more accessible and friendly as a teacher and as person than most of my previous jazz mentors. His playing ability and friendliness are only matched by his massive wealth of jazz knowledge and passion for music, evidenced by his brilliant blog. I highly recommend Kevin to any student of jazz who wants a knowledgeable, masterful, and down-to-earth teacher.

Kevin Sun is a very knowledgeable tutor. He has an affable personality and is willing to help with any concerns one may have to the best of his ability. He tutored my sax section recently, and he gave us a lot of excellent advice on how to improve, both individually and as a group. In the beginning of this year Kevin Sun gave a master class in the panama jazz fest clinics and I personally thought he's one of the best. Even though he was scheduled to give one or two master classes he was always free for any student that needed help or was seeking knowledge. Already being a great musician he knows how to explain something you want to understand in any way possible. He's a hell of a guy! I am eager to have another class with him. -Edward Ortiz

Kevin was a great teacher! He taught a great one hour lesson. He thoroughly explained each concept and was on time for the lesson. He was laid back, but was serious on the key points. Not much to say but he was great!

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
It's not too complicated, but I do 30-minute lessons (primarily for beginners) and 60-minute lessons (intermediate to advanced). I charge $25 for 30-minute lessons and $40 for 60-minute lessons.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I read, a lot.
How did you get started doing this type of work?
It's hard to make a living just playing saxophone; in fact, an older teacher once told me that it's impossibleat least for about 99% of us. But, it's much easier to make a living as a musician, i.e., wearing many hats, including performing, teaching, composing, arranging music, and, for me, writing about music.
