At Reading School of Guitar, every lesson is designed to help you make real progress toward your goals—while keeping the learning process fun and rewarding. Whether you're picking up a guitar for the first time or refining skills you've built over the years, our goal is to help you become a confident, capable player. We love working with absolute beginners, guiding them step-by-step from holding the guitar properly to jamming with others and playing with confidence—often far beyond what they imagined possible. We also support intermediate players who may feel stuck or unsure how to connect the pieces they've learned. By identifying and filling in the gaps, improving technique, and making practice time more focused, we help students break through plateaus and grow into well-rounded musicians. Guitar is meant to be played, shared, and enjoyed—and we're here to help you do just that.

John is an amazing teacher. I came in with little to no experience in guitar and instantly felt comfortable with his knowledge and teaching abilities. Group lessons are awesome allowing you to bounce ideas off each other and just jam in general. If you’re interested in learning this great instrument I would definitely reach out to John.

My daughter had taken lessons previously and knew how to read music, however, she was not proficient or confident. Within a few short months of taking lessons, her skill set really took off. She is 17, but what she told me she loves most about the program is that she takes groups lessons with people of all different ages and skillsets. It does not matter if you or your child has previous experience or can even read music, his lessons are extremely effective and enjoyable. It is a great program for any age or skill set.

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
Pricing varies depending on how many times a student comes each week. I have pricing for 1x, 2x, and 3x/week. All lessons are 60 mins in duration.
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
First, we talk on the phone to schedule a free introductory lesson. This in-person lesson typically runs 30 minutes and takes place at my teaching studio in Reading, MA. I'll answer any questions you have during the intro and explain how I teach guitar, and what sets Reading School of Guitar apart from other teachers and schools in the area. If you're interested in moving forward, I'll add you to the calendar and schedule your first lesson.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
BM in Music Composition from the University of WI, Madison 20 years as a performing musician and professional music educator 15 years as a music publishing professional GUITAR TEACHING CERTIFICATION TRAINING, Tom Hess Music Corp. 10,000+ hours as a gigging musician playing in many different genres.
