I strongly urge you AGAINST hiring Mat Correia (M.C. Services and Dumpsters) for any contracting needs. Working with Mat was frustrating, combative, incredibly stressful, and ultimately led to shoddy and unfinished work. Every aspect of our project was delayed, or simply not done. Mat was uncommunicative, often taking many days or over a week to respond to my repeated attempts to contact him. His team’s workmanship was shoddy, to the point where months after the job was ‘completed’ we are still making repairs and re-doing parts of the job. Finally, he treats his workers poorly: 4 or 5 workers quit over the course of the job because of disputes with Mat. I stayed connected with one of the guys and confirmed that he quit because Mat never paid him. My wife and I just bought our first house and needed a general contractor for renovations before we moved it. The job involved removing a load bearing wall, redoing a kitchen, replacing our windows, and more aesthetic changes like repainting rooms and replacing bathroom fixtures. We chose to go with Mat at M.C. Services and Dumpsters because he seemed trustworthy and reliable after our initial meeting and he shared good references. Unfortunately, once the work began, this all stopped. I don’t have the time to go into the complete accounting of all the difficulties we had with Mat. I’ll hit on some high level stuff (1) He estimated the entire job as taking about 3 weeks, but it actually took closer to 10 weeks. This was incredibly stressful as we needed to leave our apartment and move into the house. I understand that delays happen, but there was no major delay-causing problem with our house. the delays were because Mat didn’t send people to work at the house and he rarely came himself. To make it worse, Mat would make himself very hard to reach and constantly promised new timelines and never delivered. (2) After all the delays, we had a hard deadline since we needed to move in. Mat assured is repeatedly for weeks, that he’d install the windows before our move in, but on the last day he tells me that he can’t do it. This put us in a horrible position as windows take weeks to order. I pressed him, but Mat never provided any invoice or proof of purchase, I believe he never ordered the windows and simply delayed telling me until the last minute. (3) His team did an an awful paint job. They used the cheapest possible paint, didn’t let it dry before adding a second coat, caused damage and tried to pass the cost onto us. (4) In the end, the stress of dealing with Mat was too much. We terminated his contract and paid him for services rendered. This was towards the end of the process and we were able to GC the remaining work ourselves. My wife and I felt IMMENSE relief after ending it with Mat. I wish we had done it sooner.
